Matthias Bublath: Eight Cylinder Bigband
Where the era of jazz orchestras ended in the 1940s, today many young big bands are pleasantly starting anew. The pianist, keyboardist, and organist Matthias Bublath is also realizing his musical passions on a large scale. His jazz orchestra has the fitting name: Eight Cylinder Bigband.
What gives this musical engine unusually large displacement, torque, and pulling power is the fact that Bublath has tailored this project not only for the big band but also for the Hammond organ: The largest ensemble in jazz encounters the instrument that is almost an orchestra in itself. The range spans from blues and gospel to soul and funk, all the way to Afro-Caribbean and Latin – as long as it grooves.
His career has never shied away from challenges, as evidenced by competition victories at the "Montreux Solo Piano Competition" and the "Charlie Palmieri Latin Jazz Piano Competition." After studying at the Linz Bruckner Conservatory, at the legendary Berklee College of Music in Boston, and finally at the Manhattan School of Music, Bublath lived and worked in New York for about eight years, still the toughest yet most educational ground in the world for musicians. He played with stars like Lionel Loueke, Zach Danziger, Tim Lefebvre, and Obed Calvaire.
