Heeresmusikkorps Ulm - Benefizkonzert Stiftung "Wir helfen"
The Heeresmusikkorps Ulm is a symphonic wind orchestra of the Bundeswehr with 50 studied musicians. The music corps organizes over 130 performances a year at civilian and military events. It predominantly travels in southern Germany and is also deployed nationwide and internationally. Since January 2022, Major Dominik Koch has held the position of leader.
A core task of the Heeresmusikkorps Ulm lies in the framing of military events such as parades, serenades, or the Grand Tattoo, as well as troop support during foreign missions. Another focus is on charity concerts. In spring and autumn, the orchestra performs its program in hall concerts; in addition, it performs in open-air venues during the summer and in churches during the Advent season. In the last 25 years alone, over 1.5 million euros have been raised for charitable purposes in this way. Music shows, where choreographies to march and entertainment music are presented, round off the broad scope of tasks. In addition to the large symphonic wind orchestra, the soldiers also perform in various chamber music ensembles or in the traditional Egerländer ensemble.
The Heeresmusikkorps has a special relationship with its garrison city of Ulm and its partner city of Neu-Ulm. The regular performances in the Danube cities include parade concerts, concerts in the Glacis Park, the Advent concert in the Pauluskirche, support for the Aktion 100,000 and Ulmer helft, as well as the framing of the Day of Mourning.
The specialty of the music corps is the maintenance of traditional march music—but there is also a great focus on the development of original wind orchestra literature. With arrangements of classical works, modern entertainment music, and top-notch soloists, a varied program emerges that the audience can regularly enjoy.
Highlights of the orchestra's history include numerous CD productions and television recordings. There have also been several joint concerts, including with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Ulm, the Ulmer Spatzen Choir, or other domestic and foreign music corps. Thanks to regular participation in international military music shows, the music corps has performed on almost all continents of the world.
Promoting amateur music and artistic talent is an important concern of the Heeresmusikkorps Ulm. In addition to workshops and performances at the music competition BwMusix, there have been various collaborations, such as with the Mannheim University of Music, the music publisher Rundel, or various brass music associations. Young people regularly take the opportunity to complete their voluntary military service in the ranks of the professional orchestra to gain an in-depth insight into orchestral life. But students also like to learn about the numerous employment opportunities in military music service as part of an internship.
Founded in 1956, the orchestra was initially stationed in Ellwangen/Jagst. A few years later, the location changed to Ulm, where it has since belonged to the 10th Panzer Division under the name "Heeresmusikkorps 10." In 2013, the unit was placed under the command of the support command and has since performed under the name "Heeresmusikkorps Ulm."
