Since 1989, the Brass Band Berlin has been a guarantee for a successful and entertaining concert evening of the highest quality.
The ten top musicians led by bandleader Thomas Hoffmann, who in “normal life” are members of the major Berlin orchestras, are all fantastic soloists and receive thunderous applause. They do not shy away from jazzing Wagner or Bach either. Each individual presents themselves in the evening as a perfectionist and expert on various instruments, sometimes played nicely, sometimes quirky or even on split trombone. The concert is packed with gestures, expressions, and unexpected gags.
What the witty ensemble offers cannot really be described. It usually turns out to be a fast-paced high-performance show, fully packed with music, humor, and cabaret. Especially the bandleader and founder Thomas Hoffmann dashes from the xylophone to the microphone, back for a short gong or bell strike, forward to tell a joke, then it's time for a blank shot or perhaps a squeaking rubber duck, the howl horn, whistle, or whatever else. He showcases himself as a jester and percussionist in variations on an endless arsenal of instruments. The bright red sweat towel is a must.
In the “Light Cavalry,” a neighing trumpet and a perfect clarinet solo by Oliver Link resonate. Compositions by Henry Mancini, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, and others follow - captivating, brilliant, incomparable. From 21 hours of Wagner's music, 4 minutes and 30 seconds of gripping, enticing, and exciting “Bayreuth Festival” in swing style with well-known themes from “Valkyrie, Tannhäuser, Siegfried, Parzival, the Flying Dutchman, and Lohengrin.” In “Typewriter,” the bandleader sits down at an orange Privileg 72, the only model that has a delicate touch and a phenomenal “Tick” and “Tack.” The answer to the question, “How does one become a conductor”? is also provided on this incredible evening.
The audience is integrated and allowed to clap rhythmically along. For further treats, the samba “Tico Tico” and the Bolero by Maurice Ravel provide enjoyment. After an exhilarating and highly entertaining music show, the bandleader announces:
“Our joy only begins when we bring others to smile.”
