Follow the extraordinary path of the organ, first played in August 1596, from Gröningen to its current location in the Martinikirche, where it is set to be revived with the sound of the Renaissance and in ancient splendor.

Two centuries are condensed in Kilian Homburg's music festival debut at the Eule organ of the Zeitz Cathedral. The 1st prize winner of the XIV International Gottfried-Silbermann Organ Competition of 2023 embarks on a sonorous treasure hunt. It begins with Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli in St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, travels through the Protestant countries, and pays visits to chapel masters, cantors, and organists along the way. Arriving at the Vienna Wax Museum and Curiosities Cabinet, a contrapuntal masterpiece by Mozart is performed, originally created for a mechanical flute clock.

EXPERIMENT IV | Works by Heinrich Schütz and Moritz Gagern (*1973)

With the madrigal "Il Vasto Mar," Heinrich Schütz creates a ringing monument for his patron Landgrave Moritz of Hesse at the beginning of a changeable composer's life. In the music, which celebrates an entire century with jubilation, pleas for peace, tears, and hope, Moritz Gagern immerses himself and lets himself drift on the "vast sea, in which we can all swim..."
Gagern gently takes up Schütz's compositional principles, transforms them, and writes his own pieces that are in direct dialogue with the old master. Some works are presented in their original form, while others are reimagined for the eight-voiced configuration of the ensemble – in a way that has remained unheard until now. Together with artist in residence THE PRESENT, he explores the potential of vocal music to be resistant. For it is urgent pleas, intense invocations, and heartfelt prayers that underlie the most expressive works of Heinrich Schütz and make up the profound fascination for his gift to posterity.

Fascinated by the motets of Alessandro Melani (1639-1703) and the unique collection of Otto Arie Sacre by Giuseppe Giordani (1751-1798), the ensemble "Baroque Pleasure" led by soprano Katrin Küsswetter impressively demonstrates how permeable the boundaries between secular and sacred music were during the Baroque and early Classical periods, allowing the audience to experience with humor and playfulness how this music may have sounded during the composers' lifetimes.

The ensemble, which has received awards for funding from the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art, has made it a heartfelt mission to explore new and exciting sound worlds for concertgoers of all ages through its unusual concert and outreach projects. With its fresh interpretation of baroque musical treasures, the ensemble is a welcome guest on many international concert stages in Europe.

Versailles – a place of splendor, power, and music. Under the reign of Louis XIV, the “Roi Soleil,” the palace became not only the political center of France but also a cultural hub of Europe.
Even outside the grand celebrations, music played an important role in the life of the Sun King, even at bedtime. It was not uncommon for the best musicians of France to be invited to the king's private chambers to perform there.

The young ensemble of students from the famous Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and Tübingen oboist Clara Hamberger will bring a day at the court of Louis XIV to life musically in their concert, – from the royal breakfast to the afternoon hunt, to the evening entertainment and the music for falling asleep. Works by Lully, Marais, Delalande, and Boismortier will be presented.

Opus 4 - Von Bach bis Gershwin mit Orgel

The "trumpet of the deep register," as the trombone is sometimes called, is one of the oldest fully chromatic orchestral instruments alongside the violin. It took its current form around 1450 in Burgundy as a development of the slide trumpet towards deeper tones. In the 16th century, the trombone enjoyed such popularity that it was built in a variety of vocal ranges. However, in the following century, it was limited to the currently common alto, tenor, and bass instruments. Since the 18th century, the trombone trio with different distributions of the three vocal ranges has had a fixed place in the orchestra. Additionally, the long tradition of trombone playing ranges from medieval town pipers to Evangelical trombone choirs to modern quartets. Nevertheless, there are only a few works written specifically for the trombone. It is therefore not surprising that the program of the Leipzig trombone quartet OPUS 4 contains hardly any original compositions, but rather mainly arrangements. A significant portion of the arrangements comes from the founder and conductor of the ensemble, Jörg Richter himself. Pieces from the Renaissance and Baroque periods are included in the program alongside modern and popular compositions. This proves that the trombone is uniquely suitable for old and new music, extending to jazz alike. An ideal that is especially close to the heart of the ensemble OPUS 4 is the typically soft sound of the trombone.

Orgelkonzert zum Reformationstag - Johann Sebstian Bach: 3 Theil der Clavier-Übung

The four parts of Bach's Clavier-Übung were published by Bach between 1726 and 1742. While parts I, II, and IV are dedicated to stringed keyboard instruments, Bach turns to the organ in part III, focusing on its specific forms such as chorale arrangements. Bach draws the chorales from Luther's catechism, as the work was published in 1739 to mark the 200th anniversary of the introduction of the Reformation in Leipzig. Luther's catechism songs succinctly and memorably express his reformative ideas, which are translated into music in a congenial manner by Bach.
