In dieser historischen Führung werden die Sophiensæle aus der Perspektive des Gebäudes selbst betrachtet – des ehemaligen Handwerkervereinshauses – und in ihren wechselnden Nutzungen und Bedeutungen vorgestellt: als Bildungs- und Ausbildungsstätte für Handwerker*innen, als Organisationsort von Teilen der Arbeiter*innenbewegung, als Schauplatz nationalsozialistischer Zwangsarbeit, als Werkstätten des Maxim Gorki Theaters sowie schließlich seit 1996 bis heute als Spielstätte der Freien Darstellenden Künste in Berlin-Mitte.

This historical guided tour explores the Sophiensæle from the perspective of the building itself—the former Craftsmen’s Association House—and traces its changing uses and meanings: as a place of education and training for craftsmen (and women), as a site of organization for parts of the labor movement, as a location of forced labor under National Socialism, as workshops for the Maxim Gorki Theatre, and finally, from 1996 to the present day, as a venue for the independent performing arts in Berlin-Mitte.
