Klassik, Tango, Jazz & Pop
Bernd Ruf, ClariNoir & Philharmonie Baden-Baden.
Conductor Bernd Ruf loves boundary-crossing symphonic music with rock, jazz, and world music.
Conductor Bernd Ruf presents a new premiere of his Classical Crossover Symphony series in Lahr, where the core lies in musical encounters of orchestral classical music with popular music styles. The guests are the trio ClariNoir, themselves musical boundary-crossers, as their albums "Mozart On The Road" and "Mozart's Night Train" show. Ivo Ruf, deputy solo clarinetist with the SWR Symphony Orchestra, and Nikolai Gast, solo clarinetist with the Düsseldorf Symphony, founded their trio together with Ilja Ruf 12 years ago. Ilja Ruf, also a jazz pianist, singer, and composer, brings influences of tango, klezmer, jazz, and pop to the ensemble.
In their orchestral program "Klassik, Tango, Jazz'n Pop," ClariNoir performs rare classical works for multiple solo clarinets and orchestra, as well as a world premiere of a new composition by Ilja Ruf for this lineup. As a singer and pianist, Ilja Ruf presents his own arrangements of, among others, Billie Eilish's Oscar-winning song "What Was I Made For," composed for the film Barbie. Ilja Ruf's composition "Adios Maestro" is inspired by the music of Astor Piazzolla, in the style of Tango Nuevo. His virtuosic piece "Night Train to Brooklyn" pays homage to the klezmer music of the Jewish diaspora in New York.
In 2001, Bernd Ruf was nominated for a Grammy and in 2016 received the Golden Melody Award in Taiwan. For 21 years, he has been teaching as a professor of popular music, jazz, and world music at the Lübeck University of Music.
The Philharmonie Baden-Baden, with 150 years of concert performance as the oldest municipal orchestra in Baden-Württemberg, has been and continues to be a regular partner of Bernd Ruf in his specially designed Classic Crossover Symphony series for Lahr.
