JUPITER JONES - I CARRY THE COFFIN, YOU WEAR SOMETHING COLORFUL PERHAPS IT'S MEANT AS A COMFORT?!
In 2019, Sascha Eigner and Nicholas Müller sat at an oak table in Hamburg Eimsbüttel and had big dreams, noble goals, high expectations, and so on. Basically everything one could have when thinking about the freshly decided reunion of their band Jupiter Jones in the next year. New album, first show at the Reeperbahn Festival, then a tour, Rock Olymp perhaps...
In 2020, everyone wore masks, had a crappy mood, and a bit of fear on top. The rickety state of the world took a toll on spirits and the office. Writing songs felt like an arms race against the end of the industry and a bit of the world too. It was exhausting! Beautiful and meaningful, but so extremely tiring and fragmented. Characterized by constant breaks, overloaded Zoom sessions, and repeatedly postponed schedules. And all this in a phase where the two should have been constantly having happy teary eyes. In the end, that was the case, but for reasons of fear and exhaustion. "THE SUN IS A DWARF STAR" - The 2022 second debut of the two turned out great and lovable nonetheless. A sigh of relief and a new beginning with a lot of very good time in it and attached to it. But it was also clear: It has to be different for the next album!
SAME SAME, BUT DIFFERENT.
So, different in the sense that: The world still doesn't work today, probably even less, and there are reasons for despair from opening to closing one's eyes, but the music can't be blamed for that! So let's focus on each other and ourselves, let's use the energy, no matter where it comes from and where it wants to go, and at the same time let’s also realize that we have been doing this for long enough now to have a very clear opinion and a very clear stance: On music and on the world! Let's call friend and colleague Andi Weizel (producer & songwriter, among others Frida Gold) and ask him if he’s up for co-producing and generally having all ten fingers in the game. And let's invoke virtues that were learned together when Andi was back in the days as a production assistant working on the albums "HOLIDAY IN CACATONIA" and "JUPITER JONES". Let's also ask Michi Ludes of former Mikroboy glory, Liser, Jean Michelle Tourette, and a few other super friends if they want to join in on songwriting. But also Ali Zuckowski, who does all the pop songs and stuff. Just good people, both humanly and professionally. Because one always does best what one can do best, JJ continues right where they never stopped. It may annoy those whom it does, but the arc will continue to be stretched from the punk of the early years to the pop, also of the early years. They have always done that! It only hurts if you voluntarily bump into it. The question is always just how much self-evident one approaches such a project. And so, a little knowing that calculation has never really worked for this band, an album was written that is heartfelt, human and political, danceable and drinkable, pop and punk and everything in between. (Just no pop-punk. No half measures.) For the first time in the band's history, significantly more songs were written than an album actually needs. Once, because it just worked. So, it wasn't just easy; it was a lot of work... But the ideas were there, the urge, the need, the excitement!
I CARRY THE COFFIN, YOU WEAR SOMETHING COLORFUL
That's what the work is called now. A thing full of life's joy defying the circumstances that wants to entertain, but not at any price. As round and edgy at the same time as the title promises. It is probably the most consistent JJ album since the very first one. Not because it wants to sound that way; twenty-odd years in between made that impossible. But because it does what it wants. Because it comes from somewhere deep inside, where one likes to clear out the spirit. It is a compilation of everything that has always defined Jupiter Jones, and it had to be this way. For Sascha and Nicholas, it is a good reason to go to bed satisfied. At least satisfied with the music. The world will be discussed another time.
THE PROPS
Based in Los Angeles, the four-piece—Nick Ruiz (vocals), Dawson Henry (guitar), Sam Edelman (drums), and Jersey Sullivan (bass)—are The Props. Their sound pulls from new wave and post-punk influences, blending sharp guitar work with honest songwriting in a way that feels both fresh and familiar.
“We’re pretty direct," says Nick. “We want people to get what they need from us. Everything feels so loud and extreme all the time—it’s easy for things to get confused. We try to be clear where it counts.”
The Props formed in late 2023, and after releasing early songs like “Echoes” and “Get Off,” the band quickly built momentum through constant shows and touring, including dates with Tigercub. Their DIY push caught the attention of Blue Grape Music, leading to work on their debut "Arrow" EP, produced by GRAMMY®-winning producer Carlos de la Garza (Paramore, Hayley Williams, Best Coast, Destroy Boys).
“Carlos was the missing piece,” Nick says. “He immediately understood what we were and helped us lock it in.”
The EP’s lead single, “Se Llama (Tell Me What You Want),” introduces that vision. Anchored by a pulsing bassline and loose, driving guitars, the song balances tension and release, nostalgia and immediacy. What began as a simple song Nick wrote in his early teens grew into something deeper—about memory, identity, and the strange feeling of looking back at a past you can’t step into again.
“I hope the songs let people release whatever they’re holding onto,” Nick adds. “Music has always done that for me, helped me move forward."
