LORDI's latest work, "Limited Deadition," is a unique blend of nostalgia and heavy metal of the most creative kind, carrying a special spirit within it. The band from Rovaniemi, Lapland, founded in 1992, has never adhered to rules when it comes to songwriting and co. This also applies to their new album, which pays tribute to the toy culture of the 80s, particularly dear to frontman Mr. Lordi, who has always had a knack for collecting action figures and other items. The title of the record is a classic LORDI pun that once again underscores their sense of innovation when it comes to choosing thematic content, securing the piece a spot in every fan's collection.
Especially through their spectacular ESC victory in 2006, LORDI gained international attention, as they carried their vibrant, horror-genre-inspired music into the world. Their immense creative power is primarily demonstrated by a glance at their previous discography, which includes 18 studio albums, including classics like “Get Heavy” or “The Arockalypse,” and offers enormous variety with their monstrous 7-CD milestone "Lordiversity" [2021].
Despite such milestones, 2024 held quite a few extraordinary things for the band: The monsters found themselves, among other things, as models with vegan handbags in Vogue Scandinavia to express their animal-friendly attitude, which also caused quite a stir outside the Scandinavian media landscape. Another highlight was ‘Made Of Metal’ - an anthem that resulted from the fusion of LORDI's musical prowess and the highly exciting technology of the mobile phone manufacturer OnePlus. After an arena tour with SABATON and BABYMETAL, LORDI returned to the local halls in 2024 as headliners in a multi-week tour - and amidst such impressive activities, LORDI also managed to record their new album "Limited Deadition," which continues their exploration of AOR territories while increasingly opting for a harder, more metallic sound.
“I would say we’ve created a kind of sibling album to its predecessor,” reveals Mr. Lordi. “Of course, the AOR influence cannot be denied, but ‘Limited Deadition’ offers more metal in terms of riffs and the tempo of some pieces.” Even though the mentioned shows with both scene giants gave the quintet additional motivation, LORDI's plans for their new album didn’t change in the slightest. “We always write what we feel like and what simply bubbles out of us,” he emphasizes. How true!
‘Limited Deadition’ was recorded at IluSound Studio and in the Finnvox Studios (Helsinki, Finland), with Mr. Lordi himself taking charge of its production. Mixed by Ilkka Herkman and mastered by Pauli Saastamoinen, the end result is full of dedication down to the last detail, as Mr. Lordi also took care of the artwork and layout design. The loose theme of “80s Toys” connects the tracks and brings the frontman’s mentioned collecting passion to the forefront, which has accompanied him since childhood. By the way, his parents are to blame for his obsession, as they didn’t buy him all the desired figures back then - and that very addiction continues up to “Limited Deadition.”
Mr. Lordi comments: “The theme actually only forms the rough framework of the album, even though I have been fascinated by all this toy for a long time. I have always collected various things, almost hoarded. I can’t even remember which piece my collection started with, but my greed more or less goes back to ‘Muppet Show’ figures, followed by ‘Star Wars’ and ‘E.T.’ items. The latter is also my favorite movie.” A normal child would probably have settled for that, but apparently, the world didn’t have Mr. Lordi on its radar: “The most expensive and coveted products were just not feasible for my parents, which is why my addiction probably grew even greater in adulthood. Because then I finally had the financial means to scour the entire internet and buy all the figures I had dreamed of for so long,” he explains with a laugh about the ‘root of all evil.’
Opened by another characteristic ‘SCG’ chapter, LORDI's latest work begins with tracks like ‘Legends Are Made Of Clichés’ and the lead single ‘Syntax Terror,’ where irresistible melodies merge with cinematic references. ‘Skelephant In The Room’ continues the tradition of super catchy choruses, before ‘SCGTV Saturday Night Man Event’ revives memories of the shopping channel of the 80s, which likely also had quite a significant influence on the detailed booklet of the album. The ballad ‘Collectable’ captivates instead with emotional depth and reminiscences of PINK FLOYD's ‘The Great Gig In The Sky.’
The second half of the record slightly picks up the pace with songs like ‘Fangoria,’ ‘Hellizabeth,’ and ‘Retropolis,’ which are likely to become new fan favorites. The title track deals with the problems collectors face in today’s digital age. An ode to all who still appreciate physical products, before ‘You Might Be Deceased’ concludes the album with a certain nostalgia.
“Limited Deadition” is far from being the end of LORDI's adventure, but a lively and exciting new chapter. As their popularity continues to grow and their refreshing approach to music and show is far from over, LORDI’s future looks as promising as it hasn’t in a long time. Of course, the new record will also lead the monster squad back onto the stages of the world, which is why their fanbase can already look forward to an updated show with new tricks and surprises. “You can expect monsters and fine melodic heavy rock, but I won’t give away more just yet,” jokes Mr. Lordi. Those who dive into “Limited Deadition” will definitely be rewarded with a monstrous adventure. This album is not just a new record, but a celebration of LORDI's unrivaled creativity and enduring legacy.
