Epilog: Malte Viefs Kammer
As the nights grow longer and the year comes to a close, the tide concerts set a particularly atmospheric finale. In the last concert of the year, "Malte Viefs Kammer" with its program "Winter" will be featured – a musical invitation to pause, far removed from the usual pre-Christmas hustle and bustle, opening up space for genuine contemplation. The musicians, already well-known to the East Frisian audience through numerous previous performances, will strike quieter, introspective tones this time.
At the center of the evening are familiar melodies, which, however, appear in a completely new, timeless garb. Thus, the Leipzig guitarist and composer Malte Vief, the violinist Thomas Fleck, and the cellist Matthias Hübner free old tunes like "Es kommt ein Schiff geladen," "Es ist ein Ros‘ entsprungen," or "Maria durch ein Dornwald ging" from all kitsch, and instead lay bare the mystical and touching core of these songs in transparent, floating arrangements. These sensitive reinterpretations seamlessly weave together with Vief's own compositions, which translate the character of the season into sound images. The centerpiece is the small suite "Winterreise," which has nothing to do with Schubert but speaks a completely unique language: In movements like "Schneeflocke," the instruments capture the fleeting delicacy of the first snow, while "Winternacht" makes audible the clear, cold silence and the vastness of the starry sky.
However, the musical horizon of the trio extends even further back. The three musicians pay tribute to the masters of the Renaissance and Baroque. In doing so, these historical forms are by no means dusty, but are brought into the here and now through the unmistakable style of the ensemble – an organic fusion of classical polyphony, the energy of rock, and folkloristic melody. Thomas Fleck, leading violinist in the MDR Symphony Orchestra, and the "border-crossing cellist" Matthias Hübner form a unity with Malte Vief that reacts intuitively to one another and playfully dissolves genre boundaries. It is a concert evening that acts like a warming light in the dark season and offers an ideal, peaceful conclusion to a concert year full of events.
