Erste letzte Sekunde - Eine Gala von Christoph Marthaler
Galas are a relic from times when glamorous public celebrations were conducted with great effort and watched or attended by millions of people. There were gigantic decorations, orchestras, ballets, international star guests, rain of gold, wind machines, and elegantly graying hosts with insidious humor.
Galas still exist today. Perhaps even more than in the past, but they outdo each other in the same predictable course, interchangeable text blocks for presentations and acceptance speeches, as well as stage designs in Dubai style. Absurd trophies for individual and group performances in film, music, and theater are awarded, as well as awards for lifetime achievements and civil courage.
When Christoph Marthaler directs a gala, then in the gap between the overflowing bouquets of flowers on the right and left of the stage, people are honored time and again, yet the gala actually focuses entirely on itself this time and celebrates the essence of the gala in every conceivable sound, form, and color. In Marthaler's gala, the gala celebrates a musical feast of simultaneity! Past, present, and future of this wonderful art form merge into a single first last second. And because homo sapiens cannot stand such a thing very well, the question arises immediately: What can the gala do that we cannot? Does it offer comfort in the difficult hours of change, farewell, and new beginnings? Yes and no, for as we all know, it is not the gala that passes, but only the individual human time and again. This is unfair, but it gives the gala as such a rightful hope for everlasting existence! What a prospect!
