With his early departure from the opera stage in 1829,
Gioachino Rossini composed, in addition to chamber music,
only larger choral works. Among these is the Stabat Mater,
which was created in two phases of work between 1831 and 1841
and had its world premiere in Paris in 1842. The text
condenses Mary's pain in the face of the crucified into a prayer.
In 10 movements, Rossini unites various forms such as aria,
duet, quartet, and choir, operatically arioso writing, and strict
a cappella style into one of the highlights of this genre.
After the successful performance of the praise song by F. Mendelssohn
Bartholdy in 2025, the Kantorei auf dem Bännjerrück is preparing
for the special concert in the abbey church: The vocal quartet and the
choir will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra, following an
arrangement by J. Linckelmann from 2016. With the arrangement
(flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, timpani, and strings),
the symphonic character remains preserved. This instrumentation
provides an optimal balance of transparency and orchestral sound
and is ideally suited to the special acoustics in the abbey church.
