Who says that environmental protection and art are not an exciting combination? At a time when our planet is groaning under the challenges of climate change, artists are impressively creating a bridge between aesthetics and action. They use art to raise pressing questions, open new perspectives, and inspire concrete solutions.

The group exhibition featuring works by members of BBK and GEDOK not only presents in diverse ways the role sustainability plays in the context of art, but also offers inspiration for a livable future. A future where creativity and responsibility go hand in hand.

The Künstlerhaus Karlsruhe will become a place of encounter and communication with the urban community, creating a participatory experience and event space that promotes open societal dialogue about sustainability. A concert during the opening and a discussion on the topic of "Art and Sustainability" with important stakeholders from the city and cultural scene will further broaden the scope.

Works by Rotraud von der Heide, performance artist, Berlin (Die Wüste lebt. Historical art and sustainability project of the 1980s), Daniela Butsch, Berlin (Night projection) and Rui Zhang/HfG Karlsruhe (Interactive installation on ocean pollution).

The exhibition is dedicated to the feminist activist and performance artist Rotraud von der Heide, Berlin, and presents her sustainable, climate- and human-friendly art project “Die Wüste lebt” from the 1980s, in which she developed urban and social utopias.
The exhibition transforms into a performance, as the artist will be present throughout the exhibition period. She will speak about her work. Discussion and talk rounds will create a vibrant art-action space.
The historical sustainability art project is contextualized with younger works that refer filmically and installatively to the world's oceans, such as the video “Speed Manipulation” by the film and moving image artist Daniela Butsch, Berlin. Her night projection extends the exhibition into the public realm. The installation “Jellystic” by media artist Rui Zhang, who was born in China and is currently studying at HfG Karlsruhe, is interactive and addresses ocean pollution.

Inspiration for garden enthusiasts

The garden season is open. This means it is time to refresh the balcony, terrace, and garden again! Visitors will find more than 1000 different decorative elements on a 300 square meter lawn area, from garden stakes, wind chimes, baskets, figures, concrete decorations to steel trellises and weathered steel.   

At La Mansion, there is a diverse selection of stylish home decor that can make your home even more beautiful. Whether aesthetic highlights or practical everyday helpers, there is something for every taste and living situation. Additionally, there is also greenery with artificial plants.

In the Kurpark, visitors will find “Orchideen Neuhaus” from Hückeswagen. In the pavilion opposite the Kurpark stage, professional breeders showcase a variety of rare orchid species. Visitors can not only learn more about the care and diversity of the “queen of flowers” but can also bring their own orchids and have them expertly repotted on site.

Art, creativity, and craftsmanship

Art lovers will also get their money's worth: Numerous artisans and designers display their works among the graduation works. For example, ceramist Sabine Nordmeyer brings over 500 handmade ceramic objects. These are made from high-white firing casting clay and refined with a selection of over 1000 glazes. Her workshop in Peine is known for creative shapes and stylish designs for home and garden.

Lisa Elias sets a modern contrast with her creative works in oil and digital: portraits of people and animals, atmospheric landscapes, as well as individual illustrations and album covers.

Petra Ernst, a passionate jewelry designer, also allows a glimpse over her shoulder. Unique pieces of jewelry are created on site from materials such as shells, leather, Swarovski stones, and cultured pearls.

Fashion-conscious visitors can look forward to Bertha Hantusch. The designer from Peru processes alpaca wool into unique garments. The high-quality natural fiber is not only skin-friendly but also temperature-regulating, making it ideal for any season. Her fashion stands for quality, style, and sustainability.

Well-being and health

The theme of well-being and health also plays a central role at the garden and wellness festival. From circulation-promoting devices to ergonomic products for the back, to room fragrances and nutrition tips.

A special highlight is the stand of Klaus-Michael Jähnig from Winsen. He produces hand-made soaps. An age-old craft that he reinterprets using modern, organically controlled vegetable oils and essential scents. Those sensitive to fragrances will also find options: there are completely scent-free variants. Additionally, Jähnig offers lovingly designed soap bags in colorful designs.

Josefin Fuhrmann is also present with her brand The Super Patch and brings a diverse range of wellness and health products. Particularly exciting are special patches that are directly adhered to the forearm and help reduce stress or generate better performance in everyday life without medication. An innovative solution for those seeking more balance and inner peace in daily life.

Delight for all senses

Of course, the culinary aspect is not neglected: On the spacious gourmet mile, international and regional specialties await curious palates. Whether hearty meat dishes, vegetarian and vegan options, homemade lemonades, fine spirits, crêpes, honey from the beekeeper, licorice, or Italian ice cream, there is something for every taste.
