A journey through the Sahara

Deep in the Algerian desert stands a house, raw on a high plateau, it has a single room. A retreat, a place of seclusion. The man who built it was happy there. He had been drawn deeper into the desert; now he was all alone. At night with the stars, and when he stepped out the door in the morning, he looked into an endless landscape of yellow mountains.

As often with his books, it was also this time an image that prompted Wolfgang Büscher's desire to go there. A travel story from the Sahara – and about Charles de Foucauld, the man who built his house there in the Hoggar Mountains.

Wolfgang Büscher became known in 2003 with his book 'Berlin – Moscow. A Journey on Foot'; sold hundreds of thousands of copies and translated multiple times, it redefined German-language travel literature at that time. His books about his travels through Germany, America, Jerusalem, and most recently back to his home in Hesse were also successes and received significant attention.
