Talk im Rantastic
Evelin König im Gespräch mit
Arthur Landwehr
One year after Donald Trump's election as President of the United States, it is time to take stock. For this, a team returns to the stage of Rantastic, which had already examined the election night in a fascinating and eye-opening talk with a completely new perspective: Arthur Landwehr, author and over a decade-long ARD radio correspondent in Washington, in conversation with Evelyn König.
On the evening of November 5, 2024, the majority of Americans were very happy: "What we hoped for, what we prayed for, has finally come true. Donald Trump is back in the White House and our lives will be better!" About 77 million men and women had given him their vote for a second term, especially from the working middle class. They were disappointed with the Democrats, whom they no longer experienced as their party. Donald Trump promised to protect traditional America, defend its values, and make America great again: "MAGA – Make America Great Again."
What followed was a firework of presidential orders from the White House, a back-and-forth on tariffs for trading partners worldwide, mass layoffs of government officials, brutal deportations of illegal immigrants. Trump threatened to withdraw military partnership and security from Europe. This was accompanied by the end of equality laws and minority protection. The peace in Ukraine, however, did not come on the first day as announced, and there were no new impulses for a peace process in the Gaza Strip either.
"Flood the zone with shit," was the motto, overwhelm your opponents with absurdity, mass, and speed. Excitement and a winning mood among his supporters. Concern for American democracy among opponents. They saw Trump on the way to becoming an autocratic ruler.
We are trying to provide context: Have the USA gone off the rails? Or has Trump's apparent chaotic policy turned out to be a brilliant strategy?
Arthur Landwehr, born in 1958, was an ARD radio correspondent in Washington, D.C. from 1999 to 2006 and from 2018 to 2022. From 2006 to 2018, he was the radio chief editor of Südwestrundfunk. During his stays abroad, he closely followed the social development of the USA during the terms of Clinton, Bush, Trump, and Biden journalistically.
Evelin König works as a television presenter and journalist with ARD and SWR television – her specialties are moderation and presentation, “competent, close to the action, precise, and natural.” For SWR, she moderates “Baden-Württemberg aktuell,” the “ARD-Buffet,” and “Kaffee oder Tee.” She also moderates for the “Christiane-Herzog-Stiftung” and is committed to the citizens' movement “#pulseofeurope.”
