Dorsaf Hamdani is considered one of the greatest voices of Tunisia today. She embodies the changes of the modern Mediterranean region, proud of its multiculturalism, and always in search of artistic truth. She studied Malouf, the Arab-Andalusian music of Tunisia, as well as semi-classical genres that emerged in the Middle East in the 20th century. She learned Western music theory and experimented with fusion music - receiving countless awards in Tunisia and abroad.
Dorsaf Hamdani was born in 1975 in the Tunisian capital Tunis, as the daughter of a violinist. She began singing lessons at the National Music Conservatory of Tunis at the age of ten. She completed her studies in Tunis in 1995 and in 2000 at Sorbonne/Paris, earning a Master's degree in Musicology and later a doctorate. Since 1995, she has been performing as a singer in Malouf concerts, the Tunisian version of classical Arab-Andalusian music. She has performed at the Cairo Opera House and collaborated with the greatest artists of Arabic music. In Paris, she met many musicians with diverse backgrounds, expanding her musical universe.
Her first CD recording in 2005 on the Greek label En Chordais with the Takht Musical Ensemble from Tunis, led by Kamel Ferjani, pays tribute to the most renowned Tunisian Malouf composer Khmayyis Tarnan (1894-1964), expressing her deep connection to her culture. In 2010, Dorsaf Hamdani participated in a daring project with the Iranian singer Ali Reza Ghorbani: a tribute to the Sufi poet Omar Khayyam in a dialogue between Persian and Arabic singing.
In 2011, she released a very personal album where she interpreted selected songs by three great divas from the Middle East: Oum Kalthoum from Egypt, Asmahan from Syria, and Fairouz from Lebanon. With a small, classically composed ensemble including Oud, Qanun, Violin, Ney, Tar, and Derbouka, she brings these classics back to life. Dorsaf says about this program: "It was a teamwork effort, as it required shared efforts to make this music something new. My idea was not to simply sing cover versions of these songs but to create something new from existing material. We distanced ourselves from the original material to reveal the essence and produce a new color."
In 2012, she collaborated with the Iranian percussionist Keyvan Chemirani to embark on a musical journey through the music traditions of the Mediterranean, from Malouf to Flamenco to Byzantine music on the CD "Melos." In 2013, supported by the French Institute of Culture in Tunis and Sfax, she paid tribute to the Lebanese singer Fairouz and the French chanson singer Barbara: presenting six songs by Barbara and six songs by Fairouz, rearranged by Daniel Mille. She released this repertoire as the album "Barbara/Fairouz" in 2014.
Her mission is to contribute to the current identity crisis in the Arab world through musical rediscoveries of cultural roots and empowering the young music scene in Tunisia as the founding director of the festival "Les Journées Musicales de Carthage."
