The Wolfenbüttel Castle is the second largest castle in Lower Saxony. It originated from a castle complex dating back to the 13th century and served as the residence of the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg for many centuries. After several destructions, reconstructions, alterations, and extensions, the castle is now used by the mixed school "Gymnasium im Schloss", the Federal Academy for Cultural Education, and a museum. In addition, theater performances, concerts, and various recurring events take place throughout the year, such as the "KulturSommer" or Wolfenbüttel's Open-Air Festival.
