Behind the program Beers & Ballads by Georg Kleesattel (vocals) and Martin Stellmacher (piano and vocals) lies an evening filled with music, curious stories, and the occasional glass of beer. The two musicians from Munich play classics from the rock and pop history – stripped down to what makes these songs special. Okay, it's not just ballads... and there's not only beer.... The program is a mix of different sources. On one hand, extraordinary cover versions of world hits such as "Boys of Summer", "Since You've Been Gone", or "Slave to Love" have inspired the duo for their program. The range of artists and bands goes from global stars like Meat Loaf to the hard rockers of Queensryche. Stellmacher and Kleesattel also draw inspiration from songs from their joint band programs Tommy Who! and Prognostic. The former is a concert version of the rock opera Tommy by the British rock legends The Who. The latter project pays tribute to 70s prog rock and artists like Peter Gabriel and David Bowie. These songs develop their own character in the reduced arrangement with piano and vocals. The duo premiered the program Beers & Ballads to an enthusiastic audience during the Long Night of Music in Munich on May 6 at the Silbersaal of the Deutsches Theater. Martin Stellmacher began his musical career with a classical education in piano, clarinet, and various choirs. However, he was drawn towards the world of rock music at an early stage. His doctoral degree in "Space Physics" helped finance his studies with weekly performances in the showband STARLIGHT. In 1995/96, he took jazz piano lessons with Herb Mickman (Musical Director Sarah Vaughn) in Los Angeles. He then engaged in various projects, such as an 80s cover band, a swing/standard jazz project, and a musical production (Miss Saigon, Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber). From 2005 to 2015, he worked as a keyboardist, saxophonist, and flutist for BIG BAD WOLF. In 2016, he founded the band PROGNOSTIC, dedicated to early Progressive Rock. As a keyboardist, he found his calling in this complex and demanding genre. Georg Kleesattel has been actively engaged as a vocalist in various musical projects since founding his first band at the age of 15 at the musically focused Gabrieli Gymnasium in Eichstätt. He has performed in a wide range of musical styles, from blues, soul, and funk to hard rock and musicals. He has portrayed Riff Raff from the Rocky Horror Show and Judas from Jesus Christ Superstar, among others. Since 2014, he has been one of the three vocalists of the Austropop band Austria EI, performing sold-out concerts in his hometown Altmühltal and igniting the Hexenkessel at the Munich Winter-Tollwood festival for three years. In 2018, Georg Kleesattel joined the Munich band PROGNOSTIC as lead vocalist. In 2019, together with pianist Martin Stellmacher and bassist Arno Baum, he finally brought the band project Tommy Who! to life, fulfilling a dream that is over 20 years old.
