Marc Copland and Daniel Schläppi are both experienced masters of duo playing. Copland's lifelong dialogues with his most famous counterparts John Abercrombie, Dave Liebmann, Ralph Towner, and Greg Osby are legendary. Equally impressive are Copland's previous collaborations with bassists. Of Gary Peacock and Daniel Schläppi, he says: From the beginning, I was able to build a relationship based on intuition with them.
It is fortunate that Marc Copland, the world-class sound magician, and Daniel Schläppi met in 2010 when the renowned Swiss bandleader and bassist was able to immerse himself in the New York jazz scene for half a year thanks to an art scholarship. Marc soon noticed: "The communication and empathy between us seems very clear ... You get a real nice feel on the bass!" How true, as sparks flew between them right from the start in this duo! After the two played wonderfully in Marc’s living room for a delightful early summer, they recorded their highly regarded duo debut, released in 2012, which made significant waves in the music industry.
Since the spectacular first CD release, the duo has played several European tours, released a second album, and as a further highlight, gave a concert at the JAZZ GALLERY in New York. This shared musical history has catapulted the interplay of Marc Copland and Daniel Schläppi into even higher spheres.
Daniel Schläppi and Marc Copland create a dreamlike music, leaving everything in suspension and demonstrating a special kind of interplay. Reduction and omission to the essence could be the title of the duo's program. Soon, a masterful bass prepares a broad bed for the inexhaustible flow of ideas from the captivating melodist at the piano. Then the roles switch.
Copland, the master of chords, is a magician of polyphony. When he intertwines his unmistakable voicings and then surprises with their resolution, it has an incredibly somnambulistic quality – like watching a sleepwalker perform a flawless balancing act on a rooftop. In addition, there is his incomparably fine, velvety touch and stunning pedal technique. The result of this mixture is overwhelming piano artistry that transports listeners into an ethereal fluid and merges space and time into sound.
The repertoire includes original compositions and rarely heard classics from the jazz tradition, which take on a unique character under the hands of Copland and Schläppi, sounding like odes to the beauty of sonorous dissonance. Whether jazz pieces sound fresh is a question of the creative power and willingness to take risks of the performers. When Marc and Daniel let themselves drift in the flow of inspiration, it sounds like the intense spontaneous dialogue of two kindred spirits.
There is no need to go into detail about the life of Marc Copland, the world-class sound magician. As a late starter at the piano – his first instrument was the saxophone – he has earned the status of a first-rate jazz celebrity in recent years, as documented by two recently produced ECM albums in trio with Gary Peacock and Joey Baron.
In the last 14 years, Daniel Schläppi has released 14 albums as a leader, co-leader, and producer, several of which featured duo or drummer-less trio settings. The CDs included outstanding figures from the younger European scene such as Jorge Rossy, Nils Wogram, Colin Vallon, Tomas Sauter, and Domenic Landolf alongside Copland.
