Cantatas – today quickly associated with the sacred works of Bach, Telemann, or Buxtehude – were a very popular genre in Italy at the end of the 17th century, transforming lyrical texts, often with themes from ancient mythology, into music. In a small, chamber music setting, they tell in an intimate and moving way about the thoughts, affects, and emotions of their protagonists, making them like a small-scale opera scene. Accademia degli Affetti presents cantatas from the works of Alessandro Scarlatti and Georg Friedrich Händel, framed by instrumental music of the two composers.
