Norway's phenomenal voice
When Rebekka Bakken sings, you quickly realize that you are listening to one of the most impressive voices in Scandinavia. This woman is simply a singing sensation!
Far removed from all genre boundaries, the singer/songwriter has outgrown all classifications and allows influences from all corners, be it the folklore of her homeland or Country & Western from far-off America. She pays homage with cover versions to Tom Waits and Ludwig Hirsch. Many of her compositions carry her own biography within them, and together with her announcements, they create a picture of a highly emotional woman capable of expressing all the facets of her soul through the highest artistry of singing.
Rebekka Bakken knows how to stage her compositions optimally; her voice – what an organ – possesses enormous power and depth. One gets the impression that there is nothing this woman cannot sing. Her songs speak of love, longing, separation, but how! Not sugary platitudes are spread here, but authentic – often "naked" – life experiences.
Her voice can be gentle, loving, cheeky, aggressive, shrill, loud. Rebekka Bakken writes and sings from the depths of her soul, instinctively and openly, hitting directly into our emotional world, making us feel immediately addressed. Here, a strong woman acts in the best singer/songwriter tradition. It is no wonder that the press also pours out praise: FAZ "A siren. Whoever hears her is lost. Erotically charged to the tips of the hair," Prinz "The most sensual thing that female jazz has to offer," WELT "The beautiful witch from the North," Süddeutsche Zeitung "A voice that takes your breath away."
Always On My Mind
On her album "Always On My Mind” (release date 28.04.23, Sony), the Norwegian singer and songwriter Rebekka Bakken transforms her favorite songs into her unmistakable sound universe between atmospheric Scandinavian pop and jazz. Together with her band, she gives classics like "Yesterday" by Lennon/McCartney, "Here Comes The Flood" by Peter Gabriel, or "Why" by Annie Lennox a completely new sound, just like "Break My Heart Again" by Finneas O'Connell, who stands for a new generation of songwriters. “These songs have ‘always been on my mind’ and inspired my own songwriting. They are the ‘soundtrack of my life’ and some of them have stuck with me since my childhood. I have developed my own voice listening to some of these songs and it is just the right moment to reinterpret them my way,” explains Rebekka Bakken. “Always On My Mind“ includes a total of 15 richly colored tracks, including those by Elton John, Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, or Nick Cave.
Winter Nights - The Christmas Program
Rebekka Bakken has created music as enchanting as the winter landscape of Norway. She translates the archaic calm of deep blue fjords, the meditative solitude of snow-covered spruce forests, and the dreamily sublime glow of the northern lights into her own songs and selected cover songs, creating a winter Christmas evening full of deep emotions. With the typical Rebekka Bakken sound, oscillating between Norwegian picturesque singer-songwriter influences and modern European jazz, she shapes a concert program that unfolds its power through reduction. Bakken places her voice directly in the foreground of her outstandingly playing band, which provides the intimate soundbed for a concert full of deeply felt emotions with sophisticated and reduced arrangements.
