A mild autumn evening in Paris. Perhaps one of the last opportunities to sit outside. A young woman looks forward to a reunion with her lover. Twin sisters celebrate their shared birthday. After a fight with her husband, a young mother goes to a concert – finally able to dance again, to enjoy herself. It is Friday, November 13, 2015. A bomb explodes during a football match. On the streets and in the concert hall Bataclan, men with automatic rifles open fire on the crowd. Suddenly, a state of emergency is declared; what seemed unimaginable has happened.
Laurent Gaudé's multi-voiced choral piece not only follows the victims of the attacks but also those whose lives have been forever changed that night: emergency responders who plunge into chaos and horror, doctors who must make triage decisions, people answering countless distress calls, relatives trying to reach their loved ones for hours. And then it is over, but not finished. People have died, are severely injured; wounds have been inflicted that are hardly healable.
Gaudé has transformed the collective trauma of that night into a formally aware, poetic, non-documentary play that resonates and deeply touches. But it also counters the inhuman with something healing and humanistic energy: “We will sit in front of cafés to tell our murderers that they have not won, that they will never win. That we are still alive. With a smile on our lips. A raised glass of wine in hand, to celebrate life and friends.”
Laurent Gaudé, born in 1972 in Paris, studied literature, taught at the Sorbonne, and has written numerous plays, stories, and novels. His novel “La Mort du roi Tsongar” won the Lauréat du Goncourt des lycéens in 2002 and the Prix des libraires in 2003. In 2004, he received France's most important literary prize, the Prix Goncourt, for “Le soleil des Scorta.”
“Les terrasses/Paris danach” premiered in 2024 at the Théâtre de la Colline in Paris, with the German-language premiere in October 2026 at the Deutsches Theater Göttingen, followed by the Zimmertheater Tübingen.
