Grand Classic Ballet - Schwanensee - Jenseits der Bühne mit live Streichquartett
SWAN LAKE – A CLASSIC IN NEW CLOSENESS
For years, Grand Classic Ballet has stood for great classical ballet experiences on German stages. With its traditional winter tours, the company regularly brings classics like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker to theaters across the republic – works that have become an integral part of the pre-Christmas season and cultural rituals for many. With “Swan Lake — Beyond the Stage,” Grand Classic Ballet now consciously takes a new direction. The production has been developed to make the famous classic experienceable beyond the winter months and on smaller stages – in a form that remains familiar while also opening up new perspectives. At the center remains the classical ballet and the well-known story of Odette and Odile. What is new is the way of storytelling: more concentrated, immediate, and emotionally dense. A live string quartet accompanies the dancers directly on stage, giving the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky a special presence. The chamber music sound brings out fine nuances and intensifies every movement, every expression. The production consciously emphasizes clarity and focus. Instead of large effects, expression, tension, and feeling take center stage. “Swan Lake — Beyond the Stage” is not a smaller version of the grand production, but a standalone artistic form that gains impact through reduction.
With several hundred performances each year, Grand Classic Ballet is one of the most active ballet companies in Germany. From March onwards, this new version of Swan Lake will tour throughout Germany all year round, adapting flexibly to various stages. This is precisely what it was created for: to showcase classical ballet art in high quality where proximity allows for new intensity.
For all those who love Swan Lake, this is a new encounter with a familiar work. For all those who think they know the classic, a surprisingly fresh experience.
“Swan Lake — Beyond the Stage” emerges from the interplay of three artistic signatures. The vision and conceptual foundation come from producer Konstantin Rain, who has deliberately rethought the classic – closer to the audience, more flexible in space, and open to new forms of expression, without giving up its classical identity.
The choreographic and scenic design is shaped by Anastasia Isaeva, former prima ballerina and current ballet director and ballet mistress. Her experience gives the production clarity, balance, and dramatic precision.
This handwriting is complemented by Elisabeth Taranda, an active prima ballerina of the company. Her current stage presence and emotional immediacy flow directly into the production – on and off stage.
Together, they shape a version of Swan Lake that respects tradition while also breathing anew: intense, contemporary, and surprisingly close.
