It is said that during colonial times, in the Bolivian Altiplano Plateau, the river Desaguadero with its uncontrollable nature was demonized as “the Devil” by colonial settlers. Since then, the river has dried out, turning from water to salt after centuries of continuous extraction. Set in the salty ruins of the vanished river, The River and The Devil invokes the devil as the river’s guardian and embarks on a search for the remnants of fragmented stories, the mythological figures and spirits that once inhabited the river.

With The River and The Devil, Brussels-based Argentinian choreographer Paula Almirón comes to Berlin for the first time. She works at the intersection of choreography and writing, exploring the ongoing intra-action between the social, the spiritual and the geological realms. Since 2019, her work has focused on “water choreographies”. For The River and The Devil she combines dance, visual art, sound and collective storytelling to create a haunting meditation on loss and resilience.

The motto for this year’s festival at the Erika Mann Elementary School is “water is life.” In making this decision, the students will set off on the search for stories about water, conduct research into the topic of water and develop ideas together from which movement sequences, scenes, collages and small pieces of theater can be made that will then be presented on the stage of Schaubude Berlin.

This year's theater festival of the Erika Mann Elementary School is themed "Wasser ist Leben." The students embark on a search for water stories, research the topic of water, and collaboratively develop ideas from which movement sequences, scenes, collages, and small theater pieces will emerge, to be presented on the stage of Schaubude Berlin.

Das Leben ist ein Fest - Premiere

Party planner Max is tasked with organizing a splendid wedding in a baroque castle garden in Provence. But then everything goes wrong: the guests are stuck in traffic, the band is sick, and the food is spoiled. Even his own crew drives Max to despair with all their quirks. Then his mistress causes a scene, and a supposed tax inspector shows up.
An evening to forget? Not at all! With a loud bang, the celebration takes a turn that no one anticipated – and shakes up the lives of all involved. Sometimes, small disasters can lead to something wonderfully beautiful.
This celebration will be stylish and chaotic, elegant and spontaneous, funny and touching. Elisabeth Frank ("The Perfect Secret") directs the comedy with a large ensemble, wonderful decoration, and a lot of humor. Perfect for a warm summer evening on the forest stage in Deister!

"Das Leben ist ein Fest" is based on the celebrated French film comedy by directors Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano, who also created "The Intouchables."
