LOST IN MUSIC - "Read & Cover" w/ Gereon Klug, Isabel Bogdan, Jasmin Ramadan, Veranda Music, Austrofred, Ingo Scheel, André Boße & Don Marco
Presented by ByteFM.
IT‘S A HARDCORE NIGHT was the name of a Munich event series in the 2010s, where authors, actors, and celebrities read texts from their favorite books from the then still-existing cult label Heyne Hardcore, with local musicians and bands performing in quick succession, followed by dancing together. Just before the lockdown, it successfully toured nationwide, but then the plug was pulled. Heyne Hardcore is now history. But now, the former publishing director and initiator of the event series Markus Naegele (also known as Don Marco as a musician and DJ) brings together once again what belongs together under the motto LOST IN MUSIC:
Literature + Live Music + Party.
The title LOST IN MUSIC (after the cult book by Giles Smith) sets the direction. That evening revolves entirely around music.
Letters, (auto)biographical texts, articles, excerpts from novels from the wide world of pop music. Read aloud by authors, musicians, hosts, actors. There is also live music in quick succession, but not just any music; no, at LOST IN MUSIC, it is also about the high art of cover versions. Afterwards, friendly DJs will play their favorite records; it’s time to celebrate.

Isabel Bogdan, born in 1968 in Cologne, studied English and Japanese studies in Heidelberg and Tokyo and now lives in Hamburg because it is so beautiful there. She translated, among others, Jane Gardam, Nick Hornby, and Jonathan Safran Foer, as well as numerous other authors from English. Her novels “Der Pfau” (2016), “Laufen” (2019), and “Wohnverwandtschaften” (2024) are published by Kiepenheuer and Witsch; both of the first two have already been adapted for film.
Gereon Klug invented songs like "Leider Geil" (Deichkind) and slogans like "Zum Scheissen reicht's", published the massive Studio Braun exhibition "Drei Farben Braun", and invented the first cookable cookbook, which has won design awards from New York to London to Cannes. He writes here but not there and boasts of having been published in "brand eins", "Die Zeit", "Spex", "titanic", "Handelsblatt", and "Kicker". He is also the only person whom Harry Rowohlt translated from German to English (and not the other way around). In 2018, his musical "Der König der Möwen" featuring Andreas Dorau enjoyed great success in Hamburg. Klug founded the music specialty shop "Hanseplatte", whose newsletter (written under the pseudonym Hans E. Platte) enjoys cult status and was even published in book form as "Low Fidelity". His expertise in humor and music culminated in the ZEIT column "Klug weiss es". On Audible, his podcast "Auf der Bahn" with Rocko Schamoni ran in two seasons and was also adapted for television: four parts of the "Rocko Schamoni Supershow" have been running since April on the ARD Mediathek.
Jasmin Ramadan's debut "Soul Kitchen" was published in 2009 (also adapted into a film by Fatih Akin). This was followed by short stories and four more novels. For the beginning of her novel "Das Schwein unter den Fischen", she received the Hamburg city literature award. Jasmin Ramadan spent five weeks in Brazil at the invitation of the Goethe Institute as a city writer in Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro. In 2020, she opened the Bachmann Prize competition with a first draft of "Auf Wiedersehen" at the invitation of Philipp Tingler. Her latest novel "Auf Wiedersehen" was published in 2023. Jasmin Ramadan lives in Hamburg as a freelance writer and publishes her column “Einfach gesagt” in the taz.
André Boße, born in 1974, is a freelance cultural journalist and book author residing in Cologne. He writes for music magazines such as Musikexpress, MINT, Visions, and Classic Rock as well as for Die Zeit. For the magazine Galore, he has conducted interviews for many years with stars like Beyoncé, Michael Stipe, or Chris Martin. He was responsible for the chart magazine at the Hamburg label Clouds Hill for four issues. He is a co-author of books about Depeche Mode and the author of a volume in the Reclam series "100 Seiten über Die drei ???". His latest publication with Reclam is "Voyage, Voyage - eine Reise durch die französische Popmusik". As a musician, he played in the band Stars Play Music in the 2000s, whose album Tobias Levin produced in Hamburg. As a football fan, his heart belongs to HSV. Despite everything.
Veranda Music is the Hamburg-based band led by Lissabon-born singer-songwriter Nicolai von Schweder-Schreiner, which also includes Lars Precht (Blumfeld), Felix Huber (Die Erde II), and Harm Hinz. The band, which critics say combines "the poetic genius of Joni Mitchell, the laconic style of Donald Fagen, the reflective melancholy of John Lennon, the grandeur of David Bowie, and the intellectually quirky didactics of Syd Barrett" or "Tindersticks on E", "Heroin rock and Bossa Nova," "arranged by gods", has only played a few select shows in recent years. In 2021, they released their first German-language album "Unter Einfluss" on Staatsakt, featuring lyrics from Tobias Gruben (Die Erde II), Heinrich Heine, and Udo Lindenberg. Their latest release is the Brazilian EP "A Night in Jaçanã"; a new album is in progress.
Austrofred is a phenomenon: Since 2002, the good-looking Upper Austrian has been active, making films, on television, writing six highly successful books, performing around 700 readings and concerts, and moderating political events and fashion shows. The trademark blend of Queen music and Austropop lyrics seems at first glance crude and funny, on the second cheeky and charming, and on the third simply magnificent. Whoever sings the lyrics of "Märchenprinz" to "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Schifoan" to "We Will Rock You" is either a genius or a genius. He also sports a Freddie Mercury outfit at Madame Tussaud’s level, chosen Wembley moves, and a well-groomed mustache – Austrofred clearly has what rock’n’roller Jerry Lewis calls "Great Balls of Fire": big fire balls.
Don Marco has been playing in various underground bands since the 90s. As the singer, guitarist, and songwriter of the indie garage band Fuck Yeah, he released two albums and played with bands such as Maximo Park, Algiers, and Frightened Rabbit. As Don Marco & die kleine Freiheit, he released two German-language albums with various musicians like Kristof Hahn (Swans), Tim Jürgens (Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen), or Philip Bradatsch. His new band is called Drug Stop, with a debut album in preparation. He earned his living as a publishing director at Heyne Hardcore and recently headed the program for btb Verlag.
Ingo Scheel played his first gig with his punk band at the same place where director Lars Jessen also had Rocko Schamoni’s "Dorfpunks" perform: on the aula stage of the Hans-Geiger-Gymnasium in Kiel. For Ingo Scheel, born in 1964 in the harbor city, music has remained – as a singer, drummer, and freelance journalist and author. For MINT Magazine, he is on the vinyl beat; he is also active for Visions, Galore, Musikexpress, as well as for Stern, Crime, ntv.de, and Hamburger Morgenpost, interviewing stars like Dave Grohl, Chrissie Hynde, Paul Weller, Ozzy Osbourne, Shirley Manson, Robbie Williams, and many more. Ingo Scheel's record collection, a drum kit he shares with his daughter Anni, and his favorite armchair are all located in Hamburg. In 2024, his book "Schlussakkord - Wie Musiklegenden für immer verstummten" was published by Ventil Verlag.
