On the journey of the Orient Express from Istanbul to Calais, an American businessman falls victim to a brutal and mysterious murder. By chance, the Belgian master detective Hercule Poirot is among the passengers. He suspects the culprit is still on board the train – and begins the investigation.

For the first time, Agatha Christie’s famous crime story is available in an official stage version. It proves to be a stroke of luck that American playwright Ken Ludwig was commissioned for the adaptation: he skillfully condenses the plot in terms of characters and dramaturgy and accentuates the comedic points of the crime story.

“I think what Agatha Christie really wrote are comedies – or let’s say: exemplary crime stories that already have a special inclination towards comedy through their extravagant characters. The humor is almost forced upon these characters.” (Ken Ludwig)

This seminar aims to help fulfill the desire for expressive portraits while maintaining the mutual joy of encounter. What should I consider in terms of composition and lighting? Which settings should I choose? How can I transition from genuine interest in the other person to a portrait that does justice to the individual and the encounter? In this seminar, the award-winning photographer and author Priska Seisenbacher provides a glimpse behind the scenes and reveals the multifaceted process leading to the final published image. Far from the possibilities of a studio, the focus while traveling is on practical solutions and the deliberate use of natural light. The workflow on-site and post-production at home are illustrated through various Making-Ofs.

"Der helle Horizont - ein poetischer Ruf nach Freiheit" - Lesung

"I can see the dawn of freedom. That is why I will continue to fight, in one way or another." This message was sent by a young woman from Iran to Europe some time ago. She did this under a false name and used winding paths to avoid detection. The BBC has now published her words. Otherwise, the freedom movement in Iran has become quiet, and the world hardly takes note of the violence within the country.

Iran is a deeply divided country. On one side stands the authoritarian government, on the other the majority of the population who resist that very government.

To divert attention from the internal political crisis, the regime finds the war in the Middle East quite convenient. It is currently bombarding itself back into global awareness politically. Iranian military forces are targeting sites in neighboring countries – retaliatory strikes for Israeli attacks, as stated from Tehran. Igniting further hotspots in the region fits perfectly into the regime’s strategy to present itself as a potent actor and keep a looming escalation of the Middle East war simmering.

Therefore, we want to focus on the content of the freedom movement in Iran, on its deep yearning for freedom and peace. The people do not want reforms; they want a different life. And their movement lives on, despite all the executions, all the arrests, all the tortures.

In their reading, the two actors Hanna Legatis and Martin Kunze offer fresh impressions and deeper insights into the situation in Iran and would like to highlight ways we can support the resistance from here. This is urgently needed, both for the people in Iran themselves and internationally, to counter the exclusively military concepts for a "pacification" of the conflicts in the Middle East.

Hanna Legatis and Martin Kunze have designed the reading on behalf of "Kargah". The association was founded over 40 years ago by exiled Iranians and now works internationally – for refugees and intercultural communication.

The artists open a window to those who are currently not being heard because they have been removed from public perception by the regime: women and men who are imprisoned in Iranian detention facilities – as political prisoners. Thousands of them have been behind bars for years. In portraits, the two actors bring the lives of these women and men closer to their audience, thereby telling much about the history of Iran, about the struggle and hope of the people in their country.

However, to not only show us the dark side of Iran, the actors have delved into Iranian literature. Its wealth is vast – it is no coincidence that Iran has always been referred to as the "country of poetry." The title itself – Der helle Horizont - references a hope of the famous Iranian poet Ahmad Shamlou.

Thus, the reading has become an artistic composition – of narratives that are painful, Iranian poems of intense beauty, and music.
