SIMON POPP TRIO (d)
Polyrhythmic groove dynamics with a meditative character
The drummer and composer Simon Popp, living in Munich, navigates through polyrhythmic structures with an incredible sense of timing and mood. Together with Sebastian Wolfgruber and Flurin Mück, two friends and former study colleagues at the University of Music and Theatre in Munich, he performs pieces in his SIMON POPP TRIO that he initially conceived and produced completely alone in his own studio. He works with a multifaceted sound variety provided by percussion instruments from many cultures around the world, including the balafon and udu from the African continent, frame drums, so-called tongue drums, the Arabic darbuka, woodblocks, cowbells, singing bowls, and bongos, bundles of dried seed pods, and much more. Occasionally, he manipulates the natural sound of the instruments with electronic effects, creating soundscapes that – when used intentionally and sparingly – are also part of his music, crowned by wonderfully relaxed melodies. For these, too, can be coaxed from some of the instruments, enhanced with bright overtones. Despite all the rhythmic movement, Simon Popp’s pieces have an almost meditative character. With his drum trio, he has already been invited to prominent festivals such as Überjazz Hamburg and Leipziger Jazztage, and the London music platform Bleep compared Popp to experimental luminaries Philip Glass and Steve Reich.
