What is Barbershop music?
(with excerpts from a definition by BinG! – Barbershop in Germany)
If you think of hair dryers instead of tones when it comes to Barbershop, you're not wrong. "Barbershops," the American barber shops, were places for social gatherings at the end of the 19th century, where gentlemen occasionally occupied their waiting time with spontaneously improvised songs.
Barbershop singing is overtone music in pure culture and arises from the precise tuning of vowels, intervals, and volume among the four voices. The special harmony rules and the close arrangement create a unique richness of sound and a remarkable volume. Both are outstanding characteristics of this music.
In addition to vocal quality, presentation is also highly emphasized in Barbershop, where movement, facial expressions, and the whole physical expression play a key role. And very important are the famous "tags," the concluding parts of a song. They are often prolonged with outstanding virtuosity. It can sometimes feel as if the "tag" is longer than the actual song.
