ME AND MR CASH - A theater evening with songs by Johnny Cash and June Carter

A February evening in the year 1968. Johnny Cash and his entourage are once again performing one of their sold-out shows, this time in a small Canadian town. The lively June Carter, descendant of the legendary Carter Family, is also present. After playing the final chords of their joint hit "Jackson" in front of several thousand fans, Johnny asks: "Will you marry me, June?" With spontaneity and incomparable wit, she skillfully evades a direct answer, turning the situation into a comic moment as if it were a rehearsed act. But Johnny persists - this time he doesn't give up: After 31 marriage proposals, June finally responds with a "Yes!" on that evening. Actors Lucie Mackert and Roman Roth, along with musician Thomas Maos, immerse themselves in the Carter-Cash world. They shed light on the two sides of a love in show business and showcase the many facets of the two main characters. They also bring to life important companions and family members, narrating the story of the two from numerous perspectives. Through new arrangements of well-known country classics, the three performers present a contemporary view of this piece of music history while also bringing to life bygone eras.

An Authentic Show of Irish Music, Song and Dance

The name Danceperados of Ireland already symbolizes the ensemble's passion for Irish step dancing. Freely translated, it means "The Dance-Crazy". Yes, the Irish can't stop dancing, singing, and playing. It's in their blood. Fishing is also part of the Irish DNA.

With "Hooked", the Danceperados have created a new captivating show that combines the fascination of fishing with dance, music, and song. "Hooked" pays tribute to the customs and traditions of maritime communities, where things are wonderfully different from big cities. The songs and stories about the sea take us back to a time when people were self-sufficient and led a simple but self-determined life. However, a dangerous one! The sea has not only given but often also taken away. All of this will be seen and heard. A multimedia presentation with historical and current images and videos combines with music and step dancing to create a work of art for the eyes and ears.

"Hooked" is not only an ode to the sea and rivers of the Emerald Isle or the wild and untamed nature. Given the pace and aggressiveness of current exploitation, one must wonder if the natural environment will still be preserved for future generations. The Danceperados of Ireland bring the unequal struggle of David against Goliath to the stage.
In contrast to other shows that only portray an idealistic, beautiful world, the ensemble manages to be extremely entertaining while presenting not only superficial content.

Another major difference from other step dancing shows is that the Danceperados perform live! Many competitors feed the audience with half or even full playback.

The Danceperados of Ireland have a completely different quality standard and therefore, in 2014, set themselves at the forefront of a movement that aims to free Irish step dancing from the grasp of major producers and bring it "back to the roots". Media and fans are electrified by the power and competence of this new and honest concept. One year after the sensationally successful debut with RENAISSANCE, the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS present a second program of their own, consisting of two premieres, two established classics of contemporary dance, and a completely new podcast format hosted by Eric Gauthier. The original title of the concept evening was: Something old something new something borrowed something blue, as required by the good luck tradition for the wedding dress in the Anglo-Saxon world. Indeed, each of the four pieces refers to one of the four elements of good luck. Together, they are also meant to bring the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS much luck for their future in dance!

Something old: A remarkably fitting choice for the JUNIORS is Jardi Tancat (Catalan for an enclosed garden). Nacho Duato also created his choreographic debut in 1983 for a junior company, NDT 2. The atmospheric piece is named after the eponymous album by Catalan folk singer Maria del Mar Bonet, an icon of the resistance against the Franco regime. The lyrics, like the dance of the three pairs clad in earthy colors, evoke the hard peasant life, in the relentless fight against the dryness and barrenness of the Catalan soil.

Something new: Virginie Brunelle is considered one of the great hopes of Canadian dance. Those familiar with the two previous collaborations with Gauthier Dance will confirm this. The intimate, poetic group piece Beating for the concept evening Grandes Dames aimed to synchronize the heartbeats of the performers. In the passionate solo Off White for The Dying Swans Project, which she created during the pandemic via Zoom from Canada, she had a dancer run against loneliness. Her next premiere for the JUNIORS is already in the pipeline. The excitement is building!

Something borrowed: Lickety-Split comes across as relaxed despite its speedy title, and is especially very human and humorous. To the hypnotic music of Californian indie folk singer Devendra Banhart, Alejandro Cerrudo, then the resident choreographer of Hubbard Street Dance Company Chicago, sketched the encounter of three couples: sensual, mysterious, and with a touch of eccentricity. In one of its first seasons, Gauthier Dance included the piece in the program as part of the dance evening Lucky Seven in 2011. Now it is time to pass this dance jewel on to the next young theater company...

Something blue: Barak Marshall's The Blue Bride is a winking lesson about a doomed love and the dangers of naivety, blind obedience, and jealousy. In the style of a Moritat, it begins with the bride at the altar, waiting in vain for her groom, and ends with a gruesome yet comical wedding massacre. The color blue in the title refers to the psychological instability of the abused bride, who morphs into a revenger and murderer throughout the piece. Sarcastic, witty, and underscored with love songs from around the world, The Blue Bride promises to be an extremely entertaining, fast-paced tragicomedy.

In addition to the four good luck choreographies, Eric Gauthier explores in a very special new format what brings the claim "Dream Team" to life. As the host of a podcast format, he will – like in a radio show – speak about the topic of artistic collaboration in two blocks. In Podcast Vol. 1, he interviews the choreographers involved: How does the artistic approach differ in a group piece compared to solos or pas de deux? In Podcast Vol. 2, there will be conversations with the performers – the JUNIORS. How does the best collaboration in dance succeed? And when and how does the "Dream Team Spirit" arise?

Spuren der Flucht - Migration I Mauern I Menschenwürde

Since seven years, the photojournalist Klaus Petrus has been documenting escape routes through the Balkans to the EU countries. On these journeys, he lived with migrants in barracks, traveled with smugglers, crossed borders illegally with refugees, documented the violence of border police - and experienced a lot of humanity despite it all.

Migration is not only the big issue of our time, but also one that threatens to divide society into for or against - there is hardly any room for nuances. Klaus Petrus engages with refugees on an equal footing and, with his black and white photographs and narratives, shows the everyday life of people on the run, thus revealing the normality of a situation that is anything but normal.

There is, for example, the story of the Afghan Khalil, who after 1000 days on the run considers returning to his homeland, an Iraqi who pays off his debts as a smuggler, or the 70-year-old Samira from Pakistan, who has been stuck in Bosnia with her grandson for years. However, he encounters not only tragic and hopeless situations, but also many bizarre moments, moments of happiness, as well as love and hope. Klaus Petrus' images and stories cast an unusual light on migration - shaking up our entrenched image of refugees.

Klaus Petrus was a philosophy professor at the University of Bern until 2012. Then he set off to the crisis regions of this world: Palestine, Iraq, Syria, Somalia, South Sudan, Ukraine. And repeatedly to the Balkan route, where he has been documenting escape stories since 2016. Since then, he has been working as a photojournalist and reporter. He reports on poverty, exclusion, migration, and wars from Switzerland, the Balkans, the Middle East, and sub-Saharan Africa.
In 2022, Klaus Petrus was awarded the Swiss Press Photo Award for his long-term project on migration. In 2023, his book "Am Rand" was published, featuring reports and portraits of people on the margins of our society.

Maxi Gstettenbauer remains STABLE

The man with the rolling "R" and unique configuration of incisors has become indispensable in German comedy. For 15 years now, the native of Lower Bavaria has avoided regular work and entertained thousands of viewers.

Maximilian Ronald Alfons Gstettenbauer (his full name) is the affable family man who despairs of both the world and his own expectations. Unfortunately, he often does so in a loud manner, which is bad for his blood pressure but excellent for our funny bone! The proto-millennial is one of the few representatives of his craft who masters both the cheeky everyday comedy and delicate social critique.

Tuğsal Moğul was born in Neubeckum in 1969. Vati strikes with the carpet beater.” Vati and Mutti rely on “The German Mother and Her First Child.” This guide by the NS education icon Johanna Haarer, first published in 1934, unfortunately remained a bestseller until the 1980s and influenced the childhood of millions of German children. Marie-Elisabeth Lüdde narrates how this played out in practice. She bases her work on two educational diaries she found in her parents' estate. Vati and Mutti documented their beating orgies in writing. Through numerous quotes, the author allows these scandalous diaries to flow into her own narrative. To trace the roots of violence, she also outlines the backstory of her parents. A panorama of Germany in the 20th century unfolds. A compelling voice of the culture of remembrance.

CAVEMAN takes a unique look at the relationship between man and woman. In the "magical underwear circle," Tom, the affable hero in the thicket of relationships, encounters his ancestor from the Stone Age, who allows him to partake in millennia-old wisdom: Men are hunters and women are gatherers. A fact that human evolution has not been able to change to this day. What the average man has always suspected, Tom now knows firsthand and wonders, "Why don't we just consider women and men as completely different cultures? With different languages, different behaviors, and different origins?" Inspired by this realization, Tom analyzes the strange universe of the gatherers: This mysterious world of best friends, shopping, and sex. With an immense need to communicate and dry humor and an ironic outlook, Tom also observes the lifestyle of the hunter. He reveals what fulfillment "sitting around without talking" can bring, why men have to channel surf through the TV program, and that a conversation among hunters begins and ends with the words "Let's go to the cellar, bore some stuff."

American Rob Becker wrote the most successful solo piece in Broadway history with CAVEMAN. After being acclaimed by millions of audiences in the United States, the modern caveman is achieving worldwide success. In Germany, the play premiered in 2000 under the direction of Esther Schweins and the translation of Kristian Bader.
