With the start of the Russian invasion war, the theater makers Alena Starostina & Ivan Nikolaev had to leave St. Petersburg. Since then, they have been keeping a diary, recording everyday movements and thoughts. The four-part performative project “Letters Home” has been put together over two years like a patchwork quilt: The initial shock of losing home gives way to waves of melancholy and alienation, provoked by the incomprehension of the new language. Yet, the photographic and film documentation of the new natural and urban landscapes of Dresden become a source of comfort and inspiration.
The third part, the performative installation “Letters Home. Otium,” delves into the space between the artistic activity and leisure of the artists. 16-mm film footage of a river journey creates a feeling of cyclical time.

After the start of the Russian invasion war, the theater makers Alena Starostina and Ivan Nikolaev had to leave St. Petersburg and have since been keeping a diary of their thoughts and experiences. Their four-part project “Letters Home” has been developed over two years. The initial shock of losing their home gives way to a wave of melancholy and alienation, while the new urban landscapes of Dresden provide solace.

The performative installation “Letters Home. Otium” explores the space between artistic activity and leisure. 16mm film footage of a river journey conveys cyclical time. In ancient Rome, Otium meant leisure to escape the cycle of work and war. For precarious artists today, Otium often becomes an unattainable concept. In the context of the unrelenting war, it takes on a grim dimension. Artists continue to work despite destruction, which defines Otium as a search for inner peace and active resistance against chaos.

The fourth part “Letters Home. Imprint” describes how people help the artists experience Dresden as home. Home means better understanding one’s fellow humans - their facial expressions and gestures. The artists gradually learn to interpret new signs, which requires letting go of the old. In parallel, the performers develop photographs and strive for a balance between forgetting and remembering.

The participatory documentary performance “InnerVoice-dot-ru“ deals with the limits of personality in relation to dictatorship and repressive state policy. It is based on the statements of citizens who have remained in Russia, who oppose the regime and the war, and who continue their resistance from within.

Europe has been a laboratory and forerunner of electronic avant-garde music for over a century. Through an open call, the internationally operating label raster . media sought new, bold concepts and compositions. As part of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, selected projects of the "raster . soundtrack europe 20—25" will be presented for the first time in HELLERAU on February 21, 2025, across multiple floors.
The line-up features exciting artists from the open call such as the Estonian singer and composer Maarja Nuut, Dresden-based electronic artist Alwin Weber, the audio-visual artist Camilla Pisani from Rome, and Hungarian musician Gábor Lázár, who will release his album REFLEX on raster . media in 2024.

To the live electronic sounds of the Chilean composer Diego Noguera Berger titled "Freiheit/Extasis," which were created during the creative process as a commissioned work, Sasha Waltz explores these themes at the beginning of the evening and reinterprets them from a contemporary perspective: How do personal freedom and societal constraints relate to each other?
