Many of the great rivers of Asia originate from the Roof of the World. They often bear the names of goddesses such as Yamuna or Ganga, who once descended to Earth from the hair of Shiva. Parvati, the "Daughter of the Mountains," is equally revered, as she was destined to have a small son with the head of an elephant.
