As part of the opening week of Rirkrit Tiravanija's exhibition HAPPINESS IS NOT ALWAYS FUNNY, Karl Holmqvist reads from his new poetry collection OCEAN’S 24/7ELEVEN.
The Berlin-based artist Karl Holmqvist is the main figure in several of Tiravanija's films. In his works – readings, videos, collages, installations – Holmqvist uses text fragments from various sources, the meanings of which shift through repetitions and arrangements. His latest book was created during a longer stay in Los Angeles.
At the Gropius Bau, Holmqvist reads on a demo station by Rirkrit Tiravanija. The stage-like sculpture invites people to “demonstrate” something. Tiravanija understands the term in a double sense – as political protest or as a demonstration of something that someone is particularly good at or enjoys. During the duration of the exhibition, the demo station provides daily space for public performances.
Karl Holmqvist lives and works in Berlin. Recent solo exhibitions of Holmqvist have been shown at Laxart, Los Angeles, at Fridericianum, Kassel, at Centre d'Art Contemporain, Geneva, and at Indipendenza, Rome (with Klara Liden). He has participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale and Performa in New York.
