Wie können wir den multiplen Krisen unserer Zeit begegnen? Indem wir mutig nach vorne schauen, uns auf das besinnen, was uns antreibt. Und indem wir miteinander reden – in allen Sprachen der Liebe.

Was treibt uns an? Wofür wollen wir kämpfen? Daniel Schreiber zeigt: Eine leidenschaftliche Beziehung zur Welt schafft Raum für Veränderungen. Er lädt ein zu einer Auseinandersetzung mit den Sprachen der Liebe – in Lesungen und Debatten, Performances, Filmvorführungen und vielen anderen Veranstaltungsformaten. Im Gespräch mit Tanja Graf stellt er sein Programm vor.

Die Keynote spricht Luisa Neubauer, eine der wichtigsten *public intellectuals* unserer Zeit. Sie zeigt, dass Verantwortung und Solidarität – und nicht zuletzt Mut die Schlüssel sind für ein funktionierendes Zusammenleben auf unserem Planeten. Und sie ruft dazu auf, den Krisen ins Auge zu schauen – gemeinsam, mutig (»Was wäre, wenn wir mutig sind?«, Rowohlt).

»Ein Chanson ist die ganze Welt in drei Minuten«, sagt Vladimir Korneev. Und: »Meine Sprache ist die Liebe.« Der gefeierte Chansonnier und Pianist präsentiert zusammen mit der Münchner Bassistin Julia Hornung Lieder über Liebe und Mut.

Und wie Mehrsprachigkeit, Gender und Queerness, Erinnerung und Utopie in die Münchner Literatur-Szene passen, das zeigen Chris Reitz und Lisa Jay Jeschke in einer poetisch-performativen Vorstellung der Münchner Schiene – dem jungen »Imprint« des Literaturfests.

LITERATURFEST: Wie wollen wir leben? - Gabriele von Arnim, Asal Dardan, Hasnain Kazim

Germany is and remains democratic. Or? Current concrete threats show: A liberal society is no longer a matter of course. What is our democracy worth to us?

She is one of the most important essayists of our time, with books like "The Comfort of Beauty" or "Life is a Transitory State," Gabriele von Arnim broadens our perspective on the world with all its ambiguities. In the anthology "Democracy" (Rowohlt), she confronts current political challenges and, together with other significant intellectuals, demonstrates what is worth fighting for – as personal as it is far-sighted.

And what does the "German people" think about it? Hasnain Kazim set out on his bicycle and directly asked people in Brandenburg and Bavaria, at the North Sea and on the Rhine, in the city and in the village: How are you? Do you feel at home here? And what do you wish from politics? A “Germany tour” of a special kind (Penguin).

And who actually bears the responsibility for past guilt? Asal Dardan, looking into Germany's past, shows: The old crimes painfully reach into our present. Her major essay "Dreamland" (Rowohlt) is a passionate plea for consistent memorial work to save the democracy of tomorrow.

Together with Mirjam Zadoff, who passionately advocates for a liberal, reconciliatory culture of conversation in the anthology "Nevertheless Speaking" (Ullstein), Gabriele von Arnim, Asal Dardan, and Hasnain Kazim embark on the search for the unifying language of democracy.

How does one love and desire when painful experiences lie behind them?

Er nimmt sich Zeit, hört zu, fragt nach – empathisch und klug: Matze Hielscher ist Deutschlands beliebtester Podcaster. Mit Monika Helfer und Michael Köhlmeier spricht er über das Schreiben und die Liebe.

Er ist ein genialer Talk-Master, sie sind zwei der wichtigsten Stimmen (und das berühmteste Ehepaar) der deutschsprachigen Literatur: Exklusiv für das Literaturfest München hat Matze Hielscher Monika Helfer und Michael Köhlmeier zum Live-Talk eingeladen.

Through perception exercises, we will make characters, dialogues, and actions even more vivid. Of course, the most important techniques and models for building and structuring narratives will not be overlooked in this writing workshop. The workshop is suitable for both beginners and advanced participants.

LITERATURFEST: Anna Karenina - Meike Rötzer, Andreas Skouras

»Why do I need freedom? Happiness consists only in the fact that I love, that I strive to merge in her wishes, in her thoughts, that I therefore have no freedom at all – that alone is happiness!«

It is the marriage novel par excellence and one of "the most important books ever written" (Daniel Schreiber): "Anna Karenina" by Leo Tolstoy. At the center is Anna, whose marriage fails and is dissolved. She plunges into a consuming love story, is shunned by society, and chooses death. This is just one example of the success or failure of the social construct called "marriage," because at the same time we witness how another couple – Kitty and Levin – find each other, grow together, and achieve fulfillment.

At the invitation of Daniel Schreiber, Meike Rötzer narrates one of the greatest classics of world literature in one evening. The actress and author (and founder of the storytelling book publisher) embraces the old tradition of oral storytelling and condenses novel and theater materials of world literature into vivid stories. Love versus freedom, marital happiness, and marital suffering – Tolstoy's famous novel raises questions that still affect and move us.

How we dress is closely related to our emotions. Clothing can convey self-confidence and establish identity; through fashion, we can distinguish ourselves or provoke. A piece of clothing can confer dignity – especially in dark times.

The Italian star philosopher Emanuele Coccia turns our traditional assumptions about clothing upside down. In his book »The Life of Forms. A Philosophy of Re-enchantment« (Hanser, translated by Thomas Stauder), he clarifies: fashion is perhaps the most radical of all art forms, as it takes place every day on the streets. Family: Here we learn our first languages of love, here we are prepared for life. Caroline Peters talks with Dora Heldt about mothers and daughters and the formative power of family relationships.

Who was my mother? Many years after her death, the daughter looks back: On the life of an extraordinary woman caught between respectability and bohemia, conformity and self-fulfillment. In her autofictional book "Ein anderes Leben" (Rowohlt Berlin), the celebrated actress Caroline Peters ("Mord mit Aussicht", "Der Vorname", among others) recounts the questions of a daughter to her deceased mother and to herself. LITERATURFEST: »I Want to Know What Love Is« - GO SING CHOIR

Singing makes you happy, especially together: The "Go Sing Choir," Munich's first open pop choir, will get you singing. Anyone can participate; the only requirement: enjoyment of the shared experience.

That singing improves mood and makes you happy is no longer news: Happiness hormones are released, endorphins are set free, stress and negative feelings are simply sung away. And singing in a choir has – also scientifically proven – an even stronger effect on our spirits than singing alone.

No auditions, no membership, no musical knowledge required – come by, meet new people, and sing together in harmony as a choir. The theme of the song selection for the Literature Festival Munich: the great love songs of the 1980s. From the first harmonies to some challenging parts to the goosebump-inducing finale – in the end, we will capture the shared experience in an Instagram live reel.

What holds people together? And what divides them, despite all their commonalities? Aleida Assmann and Wilhelm Schmid discuss the beautiful yet challenging life in society.

Solidarity – a key term for living in community. Yet at the same time, we claim uniqueness for ourselves, wanting to be seen in our individuality. How can we strengthen our commonalities while still preserving differences?

Aleida Assmann, an award-winning cultural scientist, makes it clear: community is the core of democracy. In her brilliantly written book, she directs our gaze away from hate and anger, towards empathy and respect (“Common Good. The Sixth, Social Sense,” C. H. Beck, together with Jan Assmann). LITERATURFEST MÜNCHEN: Ours. Die Stadt - Phillip B. Williams, Benito Bause

A life beyond persecution and oppression in a safe place among like-minded individuals – a utopia? Phillip B. Williams tells of resistance and the dream of freedom.

A life in security seems possible in the year 1830 in the city "Ours," founded by a mysterious sorceress north of St. Louis. The city is untraceable, protected by a spell. It is a refuge for former slaves and the persecuted, for the living and the dead. Yet the utopian paradise begins to crack when old wounds suddenly resurface and a new power invades the city.

Can traumas be overcome? And does security not inevitably found itself on unfreedom? The visually powerful debut novel of the American poet Phillip B. Williams is “a bold, wild, often mesmerizing book” (Guardian), a visionarily poetic social novel, shifting between reality and magic (S. Fischer Verlag, trans. by Milena Adam). Martial arts and class struggle – and love: With force and pace, the author and director Helene Hegemann tells of the moment when one must allow weakness.

And a third: the martial arts school where she teaches, prepares for competitions, and begins an affair with a politician from the defense committee. Contrasts shape her existence: Poor and rich, powerlessness and muscle building, greatest discipline and boundless aggression against oneself.

Together with Munich actors Katharina Bach and Elias Krischke, Helene Hegemann reads a dramatized text version of her new, electrifying novel (Kiepenheuer & Witsch). Afterwards, she talks with Literature Festival curator Daniel Schreiber about wealth and repression and about martial arts as home, outlet, and language.

LITERATURFEST MÜNCHEN: Juri Felsen: »Getäuscht« - Dana Vowinckel, Moritz Treuenfels

A man falls in love and gets rejected. The now rediscovered novel by Juri Felsen, the "Russian Proust," provides deep insights into the emotional world of a disappointed man - sophisticated, ironic, and highly modern.

A Russian emigrant finds himself in the vibrant Paris of the 1920s. There he is supposed to take care of Ljolja, a young, life-loving woman, who has also fled from Russia. He falls head over heels in love, but Ljolja leads a life that does not conform to the societal conventions of the time. The narrator is plunged into deep heartache, which he begins to analyze in his diary. Was he deceived by Ljolja?

Juri Felsen (1894 – 1943) was one of the leading writers of his generation, influenced by Marcel Proust, James Joyce, and Virginia Woolf. Murdered by the Nazis, his work was long forgotten and is now available in the magnificent translation by Rosemarie Tietze in German (Kiepenheuer & Witsch).

The celebrated author Dana Vowinckel ("Gewässer im Ziplock"), who wrote the afterword to "Getäuscht," provides insights into this psychologically finely woven and repeatedly ironized novel, while Moritz Treuenfels (Residenztheater) reads excerpts.

In text and image, Anja Kapunkt introduces her series and recounts memorable encounters with well-read, multilingual, worldly individuals.

Two generations, two realities. Kristine Bilkau traces the changes in coexistence – literarily brilliant and with great psychological insight.

In her late forties, since the early death of her husband. Her daughter Linn, full of energy, left for the world right after graduating high school, engaged as an environmental volunteer, and is now working on a reforestation project. For Annett, she embodies hope, meaning, and the future.

But then suddenly, Linn collapses, exhaustion, burnout. At just past twenty, she suddenly finds herself at rock bottom. When she seeks refuge with her mother, first for a few days, then for weeks and months, conflicts arise – between mother and daughter, but also between two generations:

How do we want, how can those who come after us live? And who bears the responsibility for the state of the world? The new novel by Kristine Bilkau (Luchterhand, "Die Glücklichen," "Nebenan," among others).

LITERATURFEST MÜNCHEN: Thomas Mann: »Deutsche, ich will Euch warnen!« - Mely Kiyak, Ulrich Matthes

Thomas Mann was over sixty years old when he fled to America to escape the Nazis. From there, during the war, he addressed German listeners on a monthly basis. He tried to convey primarily one thing to them: "Don't go along!"

What was remarkable about Thomas Mann's speeches to the Germans? On the one hand, his great commitment, for he actually despised political interventions. But more importantly, how much the circumstances changed his language and his writing. The Thomas Mann of the radio addresses is angry, specifically insulting towards Hitler and the entire Nazi horde – a far cry from the elegant, ironic prose of the novelist.

War, displacement, and exile profoundly affect the work of any artist and pose the question: To intervene or not? For Thomas Mann, the matter was clear: He could not do otherwise than resist, for "he hated the Nazis from the depths of his poetic and political heart," says Mely Kiyak, who has newly published Thomas Mann's famous radio speeches and provided them with a foreword and afterword ("Deutsche Hörer", S. Fischer Verlag).

At the conclusion of the Literaturfest München 2025, we will hear selected speeches, read by Ulrich Matthes and commented on by Mely Kiyak.

On August 4, 1966, a space rocket launched in Lebanon. A project that holds great hopes. Exactly 54 years later, an explosion devastates the Beirut port and changes the lives of many people forever. Pierre Jarawan masterfully weaves these two historical events into a family story that goes far beyond the fate of the Middle East; "Frau im Mond" (Berlin Verlag) is great narrative art. Musically accompanied by the Lebanese singing poet Rabih Lahoud and the Cologne guitarist and oud player Matthias Kurth, and complemented by his own photographs, Pierre Jarawan presents his new novel, with Lebanese finger food available at the bar today.
