CAMILLE BERTAULT QUINTET (fr)
The singing star from France
Once, the professors at the Paris Conservatory failed singer CAMILLE BERTAULT in her exam because she was too unconventional for them. Bertault turned this into a self-ironic video, in which she sings her own lyrics to John Coltrane's legendary "Giant Steps" solo. In 2015, this became an internet sensation with millions of views. Long gone are the days when anyone could ignore her talent; in the meantime, Camille Bertault has risen to become the singing star of the French jazz scene – thanks to her unmatched vocalese artistry, with which she sets the great French heritage of chansonniers like Barbara, Gainsbourg, or Brassens to her own stories, as well as the classics of Johann Sebastian Bach to Alexander Skrjabin, the pop of Björk, the Latin music of Egberto Gismonti, jazz standards, or her own compositions.
Now, CAMILLE BERTAULT presents her album "Bonjour Mon Amour" with a band enhanced by the trumpet shooting star Julien Alour.
"Bonjour mon amour" is Camille Bertault's current and now fifth album. Here she brings together worlds that are generally not connected: singing, jazz improvisation, theater, poetry, slam, and even some electronic textures. The lyrics are biting, raw, concise, melancholic, and witty, addressing current topics such as closeness, ecology, bullying, relationships, toxic lovers, screen addiction...
Of course, Bertault's influences are palpable and audible here: Serge Gainsbourg, Brigitte Fontaine, Horace Silver, Monk, André Minvielles, Björk, Portishead, Ravel, Boris Vian, Fiona Apple, Tania Maria; yet primarily this project asserts that Camille Bertault's universe is individual and unique, without ever losing the groove, the trance, the dance. The band alongside her: Fady Farah, Lebanese pianist and virtuoso, whom Camille met 10 years ago at the conservatory, the trumpet shooting star Julien Alour, as well as Sylvain Romano on bass and outstanding percussionist Philippe Maniez. It is her long-standing touring band, and with them, we experience the magic of Camille Bertault and her extraordinary talent in the very best way.
