Gregor Gysi - Auf eine Currywurst mit Gregor Gysi
Gregor Gysi tells and recites from "A Life is Too Little. The Autobiography." and presents his current books "What Politicians Don’t Say…" and "Auf eine Currywurst mit Gregor Gysi". In “What Politicians Don’t Say…” - with the apt subtitle “...because it’s about majorities and not about truths!” - he explains how communication works in the political arena, why representatives are not chosen based on professionalism, what time limits for speeches apply in the Bundestag, and why he primarily addresses the audience in talk shows rather than the fellow discussants.
For years, Hans-Dieter Schütt has accompanied Gregor Gysi at his book events, leading to numerous conversations compiled in "Auf eine Currywurst mit Gregor Gysi." In the short interviews at the snack stand, the lawyer and politician appears quick-witted, wise about life, and as open and personal as never before. In the exclusive interview book, Gysi and Schütt discuss speaking and silence, the future of the Left Party, and writing books.
Gregor Gysi offers an anecdote-rich look behind the scenes of political work and shares his numerous lives as a lawyer, politician, author, and moderator, and – not least – as a family man. A life and a family history that leads from Russia to Rhodesia and into the everyday life of courtrooms with murderers and thieves, including an appreciation of Lenin and the Nobel Prize winner Doris Lessing. The evening is moderated by Hans-Dieter Schütt, during which current political topics are also addressed.
About the Person:
Gregor Gysi, born in 1948, is a lawyer and politician. As a lawyer, he represented Robert Havemann, Rudolf Bahro, and other regime critics. From 1989 to 1992, he was the chairperson of the PDS. From 1990 to 2002 and from 2005 to 2015, he was the parliamentary group leader of the PDS and the party Die Linke. He is still a member of the Bundestag. From December 2016 to December 2019, he was the president of the European Left party. In 2020, he was appointed foreign policy spokesperson for the Die Linke parliamentary group in the Bundestag and resigned in September 2023.
Like few other German politicians, Gregor Gysi has been vilified and insulted by his political opponents. And few have struck back through the dense thicket of hostility as wisely, purposefully, and successfully as he has: Gregor Gysi. Today, he is one of Germany's most popular politicians, transcending all party lines.
Gregor Gysi has shaped leftist thought, becoming one of its most important protagonists, achieving recognized prominence. His autobiography is a history and stories book that reflects and makes the shocks and extremes, the drafts and disappointments of the 20th century very personal and tangible. Gregor Gysi recounts his childhood and youth, describes his path to becoming a lawyer, provides insights into his relationship with dissidents, and the tensions at the top of the party and the Bundestag parliamentary group. Above all, however, he reports on the remarkable turn his life took since the historic events of autumn 1989. The lawyer becomes a politician: “I never wanted to just run away,” says Gysi, touching on the core of his essence: Enduring contradictions!
Hans-Dieter Schütt, born in 1948 in Ohrdruf, studied theater sciences in Leipzig, and was an editor and chief editor of the daily newspaper "Junge Welt" in the GDR. He has published numerous essays, biographies, and interview books. Among others, he contributed to Gregor Gysi's autobiography "A Life is Too Little," the book "What Politicians Don’t Say," and "Auf eine Currywurst mit Gregor Gysi."
