Franz Liszt: Totentanz. Paraphrase on "Dies Irae"
Gabriel Fauré: Requiem op.48 (ver.1893)
A peaceful transition to paradise: In the history of music, there is hardly another Requiem that treats death as reconciliatory and optimistic. Bright, intimate sounds run through Fauré's work, while the usual drama of a funeral mass is completely absent here. It was fitting that only the choir, deep strings, harp, timpani, and organ recreated the sensitive sound world at the premiere in the Parisian church "La Madeleine". It was not until later, for the Paris World Fair in 1900, that the version we know today was created with a large orchestra, yet even then, not all instruments play at the same time.
Even Liszt's and Fauré's "Dies Irae" of the Romantic era could hardly be more different: The former appears dramatic and dark, while Fauré wants to express a comforting deep trust in eternity. Anima Eterna Brugge has made it its mission to trace such compositional origin thoughts: What did composers and musicians hear and think back then? How did they play, how did they perform?
The award-winning orchestra brings the impressions of the past to the stage with the highest precision in historical performance practice. Under the direction of none other than the orchestra's founder himself, Jos van Immerseel, the orchestra will be joined that evening by the equally renowned vocal ensemble Vox Luminis and an excellent soloist lineup.
Note: The orchestra Anima Eterna Brugge has recently ended its collaboration with its founder and long-time conductor Jos van Immerseel. For this reason, Jakob Lehmann will take over the conducting of the concert in January instead of Jos van Immerseel. Jakob Lehmann is no stranger to Anima Eterna: As a representative of the orchestra's Next-Generation program and as concertmaster of numerous projects with Anima Eterna Brugge, he embodies the curious and unique musical heritage of the ensemble in a special way. With this deep connection to Anima Eterna and in collaboration with the renowned vocal ensemble Vox Luminis, the concert – with Fauré's famous Requiem at its center – promises to be an impressive and unique musical experience.
