Rafik Schami introduces the book and the life of Moussa Abadi and his wonderful wife Odette: The Queen and the Calligrapher.
An emotional memoir about the Damascus of yesterday and a plea for peaceful coexistence of all peoples and confessions in the Middle East.
A highly relevant testimony of humanity and religious tolerance in the Middle East – published for the first time in German, edited by Rafik Schami.
Moussa Abadi was born in the Jewish quarter of Damascus and grew up in peace and freedom. In his touching collection of stories, he describes this world of yesterday with atmospheric depth and humor – Damascus in the brief phase from the end of the Ottoman Empire in 1918 to the French occupation at the beginning of the 1920s. We learn about the life of the Jewish community and their peaceful, even fraternal coexistence with members of other religions. Thus, this memoir becomes a utopia set in the past, a celebration of the fraternal and harmonious cohabitation of Christians, Jews, and Muslims.
Rafik Schami was born in 1946 in Damascus and has lived in Germany since 1971. His extensive body of work has been translated into 35 languages and has received numerous awards, including the Hermann-Hesse-Prize, the Nelly-Sachs-Prize, the "Against Forgetting - For Democracy" Prize, the Gustav-Heinemann Peace Prize, and the Carl-Zuckmayer-Medal.
