Der Freitag im Deutschen Theater - Jazzfestival Göttingen
On Friday, among others:
EMMA RAWICZ SEXTET
The British saxophonist Emma Rawicz, born in 2002, is one of the most recognized jazz musicians of her generation. The obsessed worker began documenting her practice routines on Instagram during the Corona period. Since then, tens of thousands of people have followed her rapid development. She travels all over Europe, performs in the largest concert halls, headlines important festivals, consistently writes new music, and was recently included by the BBC in the circle of their New Generation Artists – the absolute top tier of the country across genres.
Emma Rawicz never chooses the easy path – neither for herself nor for her audience. She is committed to the joint discovery and experience of new, unheard music beyond common clichés. She presented the music of her album "Chroma," her debut with the ACT label, at the Göttingen Jazz Festival 2023 on the small, fine stage of the "Esel" in Sülbeck. Her current album "Inkyra" is bursting with energy, ideas, colors, as well as rhythmic and harmonic complexity. Rawicz herself impresses her audience with a weighty yet agile tone and an infallible instinct for textures and nuances.
LARS DANIELSSON LIBERETTO
Lars Danielsson connects the freedom, harmony, and rhythmic intensity of jazz with the sound culture of his classical roots as well as the catchiness of popular and folkloric songs. The Swedish bassist is a master of melody and has the ability to make complex things sound simple and natural. In the past, Danielsson, who grew up with rock 'n' roll and free jazz, says he often composed complicated pieces to hide behind that complexity. Today he seeks the opposite: clarity.
He has been working with the core of his Liberetto Quartet – e.s.t. drummer Magnus Öström and British guitarist John Parricelli – for over 15 years. Since 2017, Grégory Privat has been the permanent pianist of the band. With his versatility and virtuosity, Lars Danielsson is the ideal partner for numerous musicians from Michael Wollny to Nils Landgren to Viktoria Tolstoy. Liberetto is entirely "his" project. "Right now, we are asking ourselves what makes us human and distinctive," says Danielsson. "This is what I have been searching for my whole life as a musician: not just to copy something that already exists, but to find something that comes from one's own heart and self."
SHAKE STEW
With their performance at the Jazz Festival Saalfelden in 2016 and their debut "The Golden Fang," Shake Stew burst onto the scene. Since then, the band has been touring their energetic mix of hypnotic soundscapes and kraut-jazz grooves in their home country of Austria and throughout Europe. Led by bassist Lukas Kranzelbinder, the two drummers, two bassists, and three horn players enchant people of all ages with their musical stew, whether in a club or in the Grand Hall of the Elbphilharmonie.
On the edge of absolute silence, sound structures emerge from nothing, flowing along trance-like bass lines and finely tuned gong patterns, touching the listener with a fragility that is as deep as the groove explosions before. In 2026, the band will celebrate its tenth anniversary with the three-part album project "Ten One Two" and an extensive tour. They still vividly remember their magnificent performance at the Göttingen Jazz Festival 2019, which made them eager to stop by again. How could one say no to that?
...and many other regional bands!
