The rumor persists that Nick Woodland turned down an offer from the Rolling Stones. Such stories belong to legends, an often overused word that can, however, be confidently applied to the guitar virtuoso with nearly 50 years of stage experience. Even if this anecdote is a myth, "the coolest, best, and most versatile Rhythm’n’Blues guitarist around" (Süddeutsche Zeitung) ignited a great career: When the London-born singer and guitarist arrived in Munich in the 1970s, the Bavarian capital was on its way to becoming a dynamic music metropolis. Here, Woodland found the perfect breeding ground for his creative work.
As an equally skilled and versatile musician, Nick Woodland worked in the studio alongside pop giants like Boney M., Donna Summer, the punk rock band "The Clash," or jazz icon Herbie Mann, and made music history. In Germany, he is also known as the congenial stage partner of the Bavarian musician and cabaret artist Georg Ringsgwandl, and as a band member of Marius Müller-Westernhagen, with whom he toured the stadiums of the republic for many years.
This career path has made Nick Woodland the uniquely distinct blend of black British humor and Bavarian contrarian that characterizes him today. Visually unmistakable with his trademarks, the black top hat and slim nickel glasses, he is among the few musicians whose truly own and unmistakable style is recognized by critics across genres – and rightly so! The Süddeutsche Zeitung, for instance, says that his voice, which he uses sparingly but very efficiently, "sits somewhere between Bob Dylan and John Mayall, with a touch of Eric Clapton." This authentic and original style is also reflected in the lineup of Nick Woodland's band, with whom he has been successfully performing on stage for five years: Tom Peschel plays bass, laying the laid-back foundation with his soulful lines for Woodland's guitar flights. The groove is handled by Manfred Mildenberger, who knows how to play his drum set with a richness of variation that is unmatched. And finally, there's Woodland's longtime companion: the well-known Klaus Reichardt on keyboards and pedal steel guitar, which gives the band's sound its own distinctive note. The musical result of this well-thought-out blend is raw, earthy, and diverse: dirty blues, spirited country, and virtuoso folk, spiced with reggae and surf rock influences. In short: a sound somewhere between the Mississippi Delta and the highway through the Alpine foothills.
In short: a must-see, not only for blues fans!
