The confrontation of two opposing language artworks – Samuel Beckett's perfect mechanism in "Das letzte Band" and Peter Handke's post-dramatic echo "Bis dass der Tag euch scheidet" – is a dialogue between two worlds: Virtuosity, world denial, and manic control meet life joy, courage to err, and passionate outrage. Character versus person, acting versus performance, perfection versus improvisation. Who has the last word?
Two texts that are far apart in every way are in a delayed dialogue with each other: Krapp's ego in Beckett is dismantled by his female echo, the nameless woman he has conjured up during his obsessive repetitions. What possibilities of perspective shift does this woman open for us, who, after listening to Krapp in the shadows, finally takes the word? Is it really necessary for someone to have the last word? "In Arabic, 'heart' and 'to change position' share the same root," she says.
Barletti/Waas have toured internationally with their intense theatrical works based on texts by Peter Handke; they often rely entirely on the spoken and thought word, on the power of reduction. In the production DAS LETZTE WORT, speaking is central. While the audience in the first part sits closely in a black chamber near the figure of Krapp, reduced to the text and stage directions, the playing area opens in the second part into the vastness of the TD hall, into a space-filling sound installation for the live performance.
