Deniz & Ove
LOOPING Tour
For a long time, as an adult, when it came to children's music, the same songs kept playing in your head. Songs that you hoped to never hear again, and if you had to, at least not get an annoying earworm stuck in your head, burrowing too deep into your hearing aids. You wished for music that was not only made for kids but also enjoyable for their parents to listen to. This is where Deniz & Ove come into play. They deliver what other albums promise and then fail to deliver: music for the whole family!
In 2021, the two musicians from Hamburg introduced indie sounds to children's music with their debut album "Bällebad". They excelled with laid-back lyrics and first-class music, celebrating the range of childlike themes and emotions with witty everyday poetry that met young listeners on their level. The cultural press cheered, children enthusiastically jumped into the "Bällebad", and grown-ups breathed a sigh of relief when booking concert tickets for one of the numerous live shows by Deniz & Ove.
Now, their second album "Looping" is released, and as hoped, it seamlessly continues the standards of relatability, wordplay, and quality set by its predecessor.
Take, for example, the touching ballad "Inge", where a vacuum cleaner robot and a lawnmower robot fight for their great love. Or the song about a treehouse praised as the ultimate retreat where annoying people are not allowed. The opener "Batteries", an ode to noisy and remote-controlled toys that some irritated parents would rather get rid of, exudes a lot of joy. In the rocky anthem "Neunmalklüger", Deniz & Ove switch from a duet to a duel, and in the captivating "So vermisst", a spherical backbeat number, Deniz & Ove go on a search for a runaway pet.
What makes the songs by Deniz & Ove so different and yet earn them a place in the world of children's music? Firstly, it's probably because the two musicians observe the world through the eyes of their inner child, seeing things that might not otherwise be in focus. Secondly, they precisely clothe their observations in music they have believed in for years. Careful band arrangements that also work for adult fans in clubs at night.
Stand-up comedian Moritz Neumeier, a self-professed Deniz & Ove fan, sums up the parental relief and euphoria about the new album "Looping" well:
"Children's music is absolute hell. I know - I've had to listen to it for years. Christmas songs that make me want to vomit up the speculaas, football songs where I understand neither the names of the players nor the jokes at their expense, getting stuck in the reptilian brain like computer voices of Smurfs, gummy bears, or crazy half-naked frogs - I can't take it anymore. Deniz & Ove were a revelation for me. The joy of sharing music with your children, dancing, singing, listening together, and being a bit of a fan together - that's what I wish for in children's music. It was the only concert I absolutely wanted to attend in the last 12 years, and I didn't have to convince my children for a second - if that doesn't mean something, then I don't know what does."
Deniz & Ove are Deniz Jaspersen and Ove Thomsen from Hamburg. Jaspersen played in the indie band HERRENMAGAZIN for many years, and Thomsen was the singer and guitarist of the band OVE. They met on a train on their way to an "Unter meinem Bett" concert, a children's music sampler series for which they had independently composed songs. The question of whether there are more songs or pants in the world sparked a good conversation and led to the birth of the idea of Deniz & Ove on that same train, promptly put into action.
