Organizer: Friends' and Sponsors' Circle of the Bach Memorial at Köthen Castle (Anhalt) e.V.
Friday, September 5, 2025 | 7:30 PM | St. Agnus Church | Opening Concert
Among Bach's great musical role models and teachers was his uncle Johann Christoph Bach from Eisenach, that "great and expressive composer," as the extensive family called him. Bach's vocal works from his time in Mühlhausen and early Weimar are influenced by the style of the church cantata of the late 17th century. The introspective and incomparably profound funeral music, his "Actus tragicus," ranks alongside the later St. Matthew Passion as part of the canon of world musical literature.

Rhineland Cantata Choir | The Little Concert | Conductor: Hermann Max
Since its founding in 1977, the Rhineland Cantata Choir has stood for exemplary interpretations in the spirit of historical performance practice. The slimly conducted voices impress with bright, radiant sound, absolute pitch accuracy, perfect harmony, carefully crafted diction, transparency, and lightness. This gives the ensemble its unmistakable character, making it one of the leading vocal interpreters of early music.
Historical performance practice - a broad, sweeping term! One of its key figures is Hermann Max. Countless outstanding works, especially from the Baroque period, have been preserved from oblivion by him. Standard works were brought to life in exemplary performances, radio, and CD productions. The ensembles he founded - Rhineland Cantata Choir and The Little Concert - are available for this purpose.
The 15th Köthen Autumn from September 5 to 7, 2025, is themed "Johann Sebastian Bach's Musical Roots." The program includes, among other things, motets and cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach and his musical ancestors (Johann Christoph and Johann Michael Bach), organ works by Dietrich Buxtehude, Jan Adams Reincken, Girolamo Frescobaldi, and Johann Pachelbel, as well as chamber music works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, Johann Pachelbel, and Georg Böhm.
