The painter and graphic artist Max Beckmann (1884 – 1950) is considered one of the most significant German artists in the first half of the 20th century. However, the circle of his students is almost unknown. Although Beckmann taught a master class at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main for several years – from 1925 to 1933 – there is no "Beckmann School." In 1933, Beckmann was dismissed from teaching by the National Socialists – the circle of his students dissolved before a school significantly shaped by Beckmann could develop from the class.
The exhibition highlights the artistic development of Theo Garve, Georg Heck, Walter Hergenhahn, Inge Hergenhahn-Dinand, Leo Maillet, Friedrich Wilhelm Meyer, and Karl Tratt. The exhibition explores the extent to which their artistic development was restricted and their recognition hindered by the circumstances of the time.
