Death and sleep are brothers. Already in the concluding chorale of the Cross Staff Cantata by J.S. Bach it says, "Come, O Death, Brother of Sleep." Robert Schneider takes this up when he titles his 1992 novel "Brother of Sleep."
In paintings, death and sleep are often depicted as being guarded by motherly night; sculptures and reliefs frequently represent night in allegorical form, for example, with a lowered, extinguished torch next to a figure whose upward-facing torch is burning. This can be interpreted as day, but also as sleep in contrast to death.
The program "Nachtgedanken" addresses both aspects. In the first part, a dance of death can be heard, Nietzsche's lines from Zarathustra, in which desire seeks eternity, and music from Wagner's "Tristan and Isolde," where love completes itself only in death. Scriabin's 2nd sonata he himself interpreted as a fantasy about the night, whose 2nd movement is meant to express the stormily moving sea.
In Romanticism, there are countless texts, especially poems about the night. The aspect of sleep often brings dreams into play, more precisely, dreaming. Examples of this can be found in text and music in the second part.

Axylia Trio mit "Nachtfalter"

Julika Hing is a German-American mezzo-soprano who lives and studies in Karlsruhe. As a solo singer, she can be heard in various concerts and opera productions and creates her own song recitals. She has a particular interest in contemporary music and interdisciplinary exchange. In recent years, she has realized several cross-over projects.

Cosima Regina Federle was born in 2002 in Regensburg and began her first cello lessons at the age of four. She has since won numerous prizes and special awards in national and international competitions. She is a scholarship holder of the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben and the International Music Academy Liechtenstein. She plays a cello by Nicolas Lupot from 1821, which is provided to her by the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben.

Jonas Haffner (*1993) is a laureate of numerous competitions and received the Börsenclub Hannover prize in 2021. At the German Music Competition 2023, he was awarded not only with a scholarship but also with the piano promotion award of the Carl Bechstein Foundation as well as the Hindemith Prize from the Hindemith Foundation. As a sought-after soloist, he has performed nationwide with the Kiel Philharmonic and other orchestras.

Wherever people roam at night, moths flutter around, greedy for the light that illuminates the events. And just as a moth flies from one nocturnal scene to the next, we pursue the most beautiful and eerie moments of the night. The flight leads to the sleeping chamber of a girl who is conjuring the “sweet image” of her beloved (“Traumbild” by Josephine Lang), all the way to the “Outcasts” who struggle “against darkness and rain” outside (Beyond my Window, Dmitri Shostakovich). But does the moth's flight also head towards the moonlight? No, for from there comes a “ghastly groaning” and it is said that the moon “dances in the courtyard of the dead” (“Dance of the Moon,” George Crumb). Fly with us through the night, inspired by the most captivating works of nocturnal music.
