After a week in the urban labyrinth, he chugs along ancient routes through the archaic mountain landscapes of the Balkans. Along the way, he lives for a week with Greek monks at the Holy Mountain of Athos and meets a girl in the wild Albanian mountains who taught herself German only through television. He encounters pickpockets in Montenegro and discovers a lovers' island in Croatia – a tour full of fascinating contrasts.
High up in the Alps, he finds a small village where the residents still speak a language from the time of the minstrels. In the Bavarian-Czech border region, he meets combative brewers and mysterious smuggling tales; in Lusatia near the Polish border, he stumbles upon an ancient Sorbian fertility ritual with an exoticism more commonly associated with the Amazon. In the heart of the urban jungle of Berlin, Peter Gebhard meets witnesses who share their stories about life underground during the Nazi era and their successful escape over the Berlin Wall.
