The exhibition revolves around an ancient human theme, the dream of flying, which can be found in numerous fantasies and myths across all cultures. Today, the riddle of bird flight has been solved, presenting a completely changed perception. Humanity has gained air superiority, and we must fear for the existence of still living birds and insects.
Part of the exhibition deals with the juxtaposition of nature and man-made flying objects. Jutta Hieret works in very different areas; she uses watercolors, photography, collages, objects, and an experimental short film. Human-animal relationships, winged beings, fantastic aerial creatures, flying objects from kites to satellites, and finally, the conquest of airspace and outer space are addressed.
Ute Reisner composes a soundtrack for the installation “Icarus” and provides the soundtrack for the short film, which reflects the diverse aspects of the theme in images and acoustically. She combines field recordings with saxophone improvisations.
