One year after the sensationally successful debut with RENAISSANCE, the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS present a second program of their own, consisting of two premieres, two established classics of contemporary dance, and a completely new podcast format hosted by Eric Gauthier. The original title of the concept evening was: Something old something new something borrowed something blue, as required by the good luck tradition for the wedding dress in the Anglo-Saxon world. Indeed, each of the four pieces refers to one of the four elements of good luck. Together, they are also meant to bring the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS much luck for their future in dance!

Something old: A remarkably fitting choice for the JUNIORS is Jardi Tancat (Catalan for an enclosed garden). Nacho Duato also created his choreographic debut in 1983 for a junior company, NDT 2. The atmospheric piece is named after the eponymous album by Catalan folk singer Maria del Mar Bonet, an icon of the resistance against the Franco regime. The lyrics, like the dance of the three pairs clad in earthy colors, evoke the hard peasant life, in the relentless fight against the dryness and barrenness of the Catalan soil.

Something new: Virginie Brunelle is considered one of the great hopes of Canadian dance. Those familiar with the two previous collaborations with Gauthier Dance will confirm this. The intimate, poetic group piece Beating for the concept evening Grandes Dames aimed to synchronize the heartbeats of the performers. In the passionate solo Off White for The Dying Swans Project, which she created during the pandemic via Zoom from Canada, she had a dancer run against loneliness. Her next premiere for the JUNIORS is already in the pipeline. The excitement is building!

Something borrowed: Lickety-Split comes across as relaxed despite its speedy title, and is especially very human and humorous. To the hypnotic music of Californian indie folk singer Devendra Banhart, Alejandro Cerrudo, then the resident choreographer of Hubbard Street Dance Company Chicago, sketched the encounter of three couples: sensual, mysterious, and with a touch of eccentricity. In one of its first seasons, Gauthier Dance included the piece in the program as part of the dance evening Lucky Seven in 2011. Now it is time to pass this dance jewel on to the next young theater company...

Something blue: Barak Marshall's The Blue Bride is a winking lesson about a doomed love and the dangers of naivety, blind obedience, and jealousy. In the style of a Moritat, it begins with the bride at the altar, waiting in vain for her groom, and ends with a gruesome yet comical wedding massacre. The color blue in the title refers to the psychological instability of the abused bride, who morphs into a revenger and murderer throughout the piece. Sarcastic, witty, and underscored with love songs from around the world, The Blue Bride promises to be an extremely entertaining, fast-paced tragicomedy.

In addition to the four good luck choreographies, Eric Gauthier explores in a very special new format what brings the claim "Dream Team" to life. As the host of a podcast format, he will – like in a radio show – speak about the topic of artistic collaboration in two blocks. In Podcast Vol. 1, he interviews the choreographers involved: How does the artistic approach differ in a group piece compared to solos or pas de deux? In Podcast Vol. 2, there will be conversations with the performers – the JUNIORS. How does the best collaboration in dance succeed? And when and how does the "Dream Team Spirit" arise?

Spuren der Flucht - Migration I Mauern I Menschenwürde

Since seven years, photojournalist Klaus Petrus has been documenting escape routes across the Balkans into EU countries. During these journeys, he lived with migrants in shanties, was on the move with traffickers, crossed borders illegally with refugees, documented the violence of border police – and despite everything, experienced a lot of humanity.

Migration is not only the big theme of our time but also one that threatens to split society into a for or against – there is hardly any room for nuances. Klaus Petrus engages at eye level with refugees and shows through his black and white photographs and narratives the everyday life of people on the run, revealing the normality of a situation that is anything but normal.

There is, for example, the story of the Afghan Khalil, who after 1000 days on the run contemplates returning to his homeland, of an Iraqi who pays off his debts as a trafficker, or of 70-year-old Samira from Pakistan, who has been stuck in Bosnia for years with her grandson. Yet he encounters not only tragic and hopeless situations but also much absurdity, moments of happiness, as well as love and hope. Klaus Petrus’ images and stories provide an unusual perspective on migration – and thereby significantly shake our entrenched image of refugees.

Klaus Petrus

Klaus Petrus was a philosophy professor at the University of Bern until 2012. He then set off to the crisis regions of this world: Palestine, Iraq, Syria, Somalia, South Sudan, Ukraine. And repeatedly to the Balkan route, where he has been documenting stories of escape since 2016. Since then, he has worked as a photojournalist and reporter. He reports on poverty, exclusion, migration, and wars from Switzerland, the Balkans, the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa. In 2022, Klaus Petrus was awarded the Swiss Press Photo Award for his long-term project on migration. In 2023, his book “Am Rand” was published with reports and portraits of people at the edge of our society.

Maxi Gstettenbauer remains STABLE

The man with the rolling "R" and unique configuration of incisors has become indispensable in German comedy. For 15 years now, the native of Lower Bavaria has avoided regular work and entertained thousands of viewers.

Maximilian Ronald Alfons Gstettenbauer (his full name) is the affable family man who despairs of both the world and his own expectations. Unfortunately, he often does so in a loud manner, which is bad for his blood pressure but excellent for our funny bone! The proto-millennial is one of the few representatives of his craft who masters both the cheeky everyday comedy and delicate social critique.

The future is shaking the fences of our present. No one wants to move so that everything remains as it never was. Yet, the most stable buildings in the world are designed to sway in an earthquake. Because nothing breaks faster than a beam that cannot bend.

Three Turkish women from the first generation of immigrants. They arrive in a foreign country that is so different from what they had imagined. They do not want to stay long, yet they are faced with the challenge of making friends with their new home. How difficult is it to integrate into another country? And what does this country do for that? "The German Ayşe" is a scenic contribution to the ongoing debate about the success of integration. Author Tuğsal Moğul portrays in his play three strong women, whose life stories speak for themselves on stage.

Tuğsal Moğul was born in Neubeckum in 1969. In his play premiered at the Theater Münster and invited to the 2013 intercultural festival "Made in Germany" in Stuttgart, he assembles his own memories and interviews he conducted with immigrants into a joyful revue about the beginnings of migration in Germany.

WHEN, IF NOT NOW? gathers songs from the time of Rio Reiser's solo career again, but focuses more on the songs from the Ton Steine Scherben years. Jan Plewka and Die Schwarz-Rote Heilsarmee bring the Scherben's music into the present. The songs have become darker and harder. He reveals what fulfillment "sitting around without talking" can bring, why men have to channel surf through the TV program, and that a conversation among hunters begins and ends with the words "Let's go to the cellar, bore some stuff."

American Rob Becker wrote the most successful solo piece in Broadway history with CAVEMAN. After being acclaimed by millions of audiences in the United States, the modern caveman is achieving worldwide success. In Germany, the play premiered in 2000 under the direction of Esther Schweins and the translation of Kristian Bader.
