The RunRig Experience - Beat the Drum
A homage to the Scottish superband RunRig
RunRig were one of the most successful Scottish bands, having a loyal fanbase not only in Scotland but also in Denmark and Germany, with several number-one hits and albums in the charts. The Scottish Celtic rock band was founded in 1973 on the Isle of Skye. The band released fourteen studio albums, some of which also featured songs sung in Scottish Gaelic.
The music of RunRig is often described as a mix of folk and rock music, with the band’s lyrics often revolving around places, history, politics, and people that are unique to Scotland. This traditional connection in the music, as well as in the lyrics, some of which also have Gaelic lyrics, highlights the band’s uniqueness and creates the fascination of their music. Rarely has a band been able to create this identity between the land and the music like RunRig.
In 2016, the band announced that they would retire from the studio following the release of their 14th studio album, The Story, and announced their final tour, The Final Mile, for 2017. In August 2018, RunRig played the final show of their farewell tour called The Last Dance in Stirling City Park, which was attended by approximately 52,000 fans. Richie Muir, a singer and guitarist from Edinburgh who lives in Nottingham but is primarily a huge lifelong RunRig fan, had the idea to keep this fantastic music alive and founded RunRig Experience, a band that celebrates the music of RunRig and thus also this anniversary - and fills the gap they left behind.
"From the very beginning, we didn’t want to be a tribute band that was just pretending. We wanted the show to be a celebration of the music of RunRig. Yes, we wanted it to sound authentic and represent what RunRig was about, but it’s not just about filling the gap they left. It’s about celebrating their music and their incredible contribution to the music industry, to Scotland as a whole, and to the small, significant moments in the lives of their fans. We wanted to create a show where people come, have fun, sing, dance, celebrate, and reminisce, and I believe we really achieved that." Ben Marshall (member of RunRig Experience)
