Two suitcases, two authors, two literary journeys
Twice already, suitcases full of stories and experiences have been unpacked – now the journey continues. The authors Katja Lewina and Raphaëlle Red meet on the Literature House stage and bring their literary “hand luggage” full of life books, companions, crisis helpers. The two are united by a fascination for what lies between the lines. Their texts deal with the complexity of relationships, the fragility of identities, and the constant search for a place in the world. While Katja Lewina addresses themes of mortality and loss in “Was ist schon für immer” (DuMont), Raphaëlle Red tells in her debut “Adikou” (Rowohlt) about the search for her own language and the afterlives of the past. Together, they delve into the books they brought along and trace reading experiences. Nothing is just read aloud. Everything is said. Carolin Callies, a literary mediator and poet, brings the two into conversation.

Music in the Air: What, how, and whom do authors listen to
The Roman Factory and the Literature House are joining forces. Music has always played an important role in the Roman Factory. For years, music has been played at the industry parties in the Literature House, where music fills the air with literature and books. The new format Romanhaus/Literaturfabrik invites authors to bring their playlist. Sometimes at Hanauer Landstraße, sometimes at Schönen Aussicht, music is listened to together with the audience, discussions revolve around music, books, decibel limits, and inspirations.
And of course, finally, the list of those book titles that would have rather been a song is established. Guests for the opening are Maren Kames and Markus Thielemann, who, with their novels "Hasenprosa" (Suhrkamp) and "Von Norden rollt ein Donner" (C.H. Beck), belong to the most singable surprises of the recent book charts. The heads of the Roman Factory and Literature House, Gregor Praml and Hauke Hückstädt, will guide through the gala of random reproductions.

The knowledge of women and the knowledge about the female body
Eva Biringer presents a new feminist exploration after “Unabhängig”: In “Unversehrt” (Harper Collins), she writes, starting from her grandmother and herself, about female pain and how it is systematically devalued, even fetishized. Biringer examines the handling of pain in our society and urges all women to take their pain seriously and use it. Miriam Stein researches in “Weise Frauen” (Goldmann) the repressed and forgotten women whose impact and knowledge are still felt today. The cultural journalist searched worldwide for healers, shamans, midwives, and found through them role models and components of an applied, female connoted wisdom for the 21st century. The evening with the two authors is hosted by the TV cultural journalist Ariane Binder.

In 90 minutes through the literature of Ukraine
Just as little as we know about the rivers that run through our neighboring countries, we often know little about the history, stories, and developments of their literatures. This evening offers an entertaining remedy. The Literaturhaus brings together two experts who have intensively engaged with Ukrainian literature in the past and present. On one hand, the multiple award-winning translator and mediator of literature in Ukrainian and Russian, Claudia Dathe. On the other hand, the former head of the feuilleton at FR, Christian Thomas, who established the "Ukraine Library" in the Frankfurter Rundschau. Together, Thomas and Dathe will discuss significant texts, multilingualism, new voices, important movements, and current events. Individual, exemplary passages from the rich reading fund will be read by Torsten Flassig, a member of the Schauspiel Frankfurt ensemble.

Three exciting novels
Season after season, remarkable new authors emerge in the literary field. The Literaturhaus provides an overview and insights. Here are four new entries to experience or, rather, three debut novels. On one hand, the author couple Enis Maci (among others "Eiscafé Europa") and Pascal Richmann (among others "One Misses This Planet") are guests. Together, they have written "Pando" (Suhrkamp), a wild road trip and adventure novel in the downward spiral of our present. Çigdem Akyol's literary debut "Beloved Mother –Canim Annem" will be published by Steidl Verlag. In it, we learn especially about the insatiable longing for freedom. Akyol previously presented "The Divided Republic. Turkey from Atatürk to Erdogan" and writes for numerous major newspapers. Lea Ruckpaul's remarkable debut will be published by the excellent Voland & Quist Verlag: "Bye, bye Lolita". In Ruckpaul's work, Dolores Haze (the Lolita from Nabokov's eponymous novel) speaks – now having transformed from a girl into a woman. Moderation: Anabelle Assaf, translator and literary agent.

The Rolls Royce among Kafka editions comes from Frankfurt.
The publisher Vittorio Klostermann has succeeded in reissuing the exemplary jewel of the Franz Kafka edition (FKA), the fully facsimile "Process" along with a diplomatic transcription. With the "Process," the Stroemfeld Verlag began its daring Kafka endeavor in 1997; for several years the volume had not been available. The former F.A.Z. editor Frank Schirrmacher explained upon publication why, alongside the Critical Edition of the S. Fischer Verlag, this FK A should indeed be welcomed, quoting what Kurt Tucholsky noted after reading the first edition: "We may read, marvel, thank." Reading and marveling: the clear handwriting gives readers insight into Kafka's working method. Not least, the deletions and additions provide a special reading experience. Those who want Kafka unplugged cannot bypass this edition. The editors Roland Reuß and Peter Staengle demonstrate, explain, comment, and narrate.

Poetry + Bar + Jazz
With the death of Michael Braun in December 2022, contemplation on the poetry of our present and the 20th century lost its best mentor. With him, a sneaker-wearing readiness for knowledge disappeared. Braun went far for the remote, found good words for shelf goods. What he knew, he did not flaunt. What he carried, he lugged because he found it imperative. He always invested his grass-waving, bright-tickling knowledge in making connections, promoting authors discreetly, and never turning them away. But the Michael Braun-Lyriknacht does not mourn. On the critic's birthday, the poets and poetesses perform. Among them are some he has accompanied, and some new voices. All very good and all different. They come from Berlin, Rome, Zurich, Cologne, Vienna, and Frankfurt. The main station for poetry. There will be drinks, books, conversations, and breaks filled with jazz from a can until midnight. The event in the series “Gelebtes Leben. Denker der Freiheit im Porträt” is dedicated to the life and work of the great German scholar, writer, and politician Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767 – 1835). The founder of Berlin University is considered an education reformer, language philosopher, and liberal thinker: He warned early against overburdening the state and disenfranchising the citizen. Wilhelm von Humboldt is unjustly overshadowed by his younger brother Alexander. The guests of the evening are the F.A.Z. correspondent and education expert Heike Schmoll and the economist and scientific director of the Berlin Ludwig Erhard Forum Stefan Kolev. The Frankfurt publicist Rainer Hank (F.A.Z.) curates and moderates the series.

“Gelebtes Leben” is a guest event of the Karl-Hermann-Flach Foundation and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom.

First times are steps into the unknown – they can be liberating, sometimes funny, and always a little risky. This is exactly what "NEVER NOT CHANGING. 25 erste Male" (Leykam Verlag), the debut of Gialu and Gazelle, addresses. Open and relatable, they recount experiences that many of us can relate to: first loves, first boundaries, finding one's own voice, and the first own drill. Gialu (dey/er), a musician and content creator, deals with topics such as non-binarity, mental health, and animal protection, while Gazelle (she/her), also a content creator, humorously critiques patriarchy and talks about gendering and the right pronouns. Together, they discuss transition, identity, and self-discovery, showing that every first time reveals a facet of ourselves. This book is a kaleidoscope of personal insights that inspires one to constantly rediscover themselves and life. Every book by Christian Kracht is an event. It started with "Faserland" and reached its provisional peak with "Eurotrash". Now, "Air", his next novel, is being published by Kiepenheuer & Witsch. Paul, a Swiss decorator and interior designer, receives an obscure but lucrative assignment from Norway. He embarks on a journey that takes him to his limits and far beyond: first to Stavanger, to an opaque editor and the Green Mountain Data Center, one of the largest cloud storage facilities in the world, a massive complex that he is to paint inside in an oddly perfect white, and subsequently to the end of the perceivable world. Kracht's travel novel, in the spirit of radical Romanticism, narrates an unheard story on one hand and catapults us, on the other hand, from our now, our late-modern, idling civilization into a dazzling, mirrored landscape of literature.

When we think of Dominik Graf, we are reminded of some of the best TV crime series (Frau Bu lacht), of excellent cinema (Die Katze, Die Sieger, Fabian), or of one of the most consistent miniseries (Im Angesicht des Verbrechens). The director has worked with great stars such as Götz George, Matthias Brandt, Heinz Hoenig, and Martina Gedeck, and has supported a number of young talents on their way to fame. In “Sein oder Spielen” (C.H. Beck), Graf now openly and empathetically presents the sum of his experiences. A fantastic book! Written unembellished as if straight from the set. It is a mix of fast-paced artistic memories and precise workshop reports. The conversation is moderated by Literature House director Hauke Hückstädt. Following the event and after a short signing break, we will watch together with the director a little-known, brilliant early episode of “Der Fahnder,” which demonstrates much of what makes cinematic art in just 50 minutes (not included in the stream).
