Cellist Valentin Radutiu was born in Munich in 1986 and studied in Salzburg, Vienna, and Berlin with Clemens Hagen, Heinrich Schiff, and David Geringas. Praised by the Süddeutsche Zeitung for his "excitingly individual, energetic, singing tone in the higher ranges, always clearly contoured in the lower registers, a male sound," as "one of the great cello talents of our time" (SZ 15.10.2013), Valentin Radutiu is one of the leading cellists of his generation.

Valentin Radutiu is a prize winner of national and international competitions, honored in various competitions such as "Jugend musiziert", 1st prize winner of the International Karl Davidov Competition in Riga, Music Prize of the German Economy 2011, etc. He will be performing for the first time in the Berlin Cathedral with the German Chamber Orchestra Berlin.

Whether St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, St. Mark's in Venice, or the proud Florentine Cathedral: Today we marvel at these grand sacred buildings and are overwhelmed by the artistry of our ancestors. The often vast dimensions of these church spaces also needed to be musically filled, leading to the development of polychorality alongside the construction of these immense churches and cathedrals. Architecture and music inspired and permeated each other, particularly in the 16th and early 17th centuries. The goal of polychoral music initially aimed at producing a voluminous sound event that underscored the uniqueness of the event and place. At the same time, underlying this musical practice were also theological principles: The sacred space and the music resonating within it were meant to refer in their splendor to the multifaceted heavenly glory.

Although the Berlin Cathedral does not originate from the Renaissance period, its vast interior, mighty dome, and the associated acoustics make it well-suited for a performance of polychoral music. Robert Hollingworth, an excellent connoisseur of Italian music around 1600, has included the 16-choir Missa Si Deus pro nobis by Orazio Benevoli in the concert program, a work originally intended for St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The RIAS Chamber Choir Berlin will be supported in the performance of this work by the Capella de la Torre, which plays on the typical instruments of the Roman "Piffari", namely shawms, pommers, bassoons, and trombones. One can expect a true sound rush from the finale of the evening, the powerful, 40-voice motet Ecce beatam lucem by Alessandro Striggio.

Heymann (1896-1961) - son of a Jewish family from Königsberg - was a famous name in the turbulent Berlin cultural scene during the Weimar era. He was the most performed UFA composer of his time and left behind a significant body of work that goes far beyond his popular film hits (Somewhere in the World, That Only Happens Once). It includes symphonies, chansons for cabaret (Sound and Smoke, The Wild Stage),
operettas, music for the stage (including for Max Reinhardt), for silent films, and the sound film operettas of the 1930s (The Three from the Gas Station, The Congress Dances) and his film compositions in Hollywood (Ninotchka, To Be or Not to Be). As the only Jewish employee of UFA, he was offered by the Nazis to stay. He declined and fled. First to Paris and then to the USA, where he
composed film music, among others for Ernst Lubitsch. He returned to Germany in 1951.

Katharine Mehrling
is at home on many major Berlin and international stages. She is celebrated for her Brecht/Weill interpretations at the Komische Oper Berlin, the Berliner Ensemble, or the Konzerthaus. Her path led to New York to drama school, to a theater debut in London's West End, to Paris, and finally to Berlin, where in 2024 she was awarded for the 7th time with the audience award “Goldener Vorhang” as the most popular actress in Berlin.

Tilmar Kuhn, actor and speaker,
born and raised in Berlin, studied acting at the University of Film and Television (Film University) Konrad Wolf in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Tilmar Kuhn was a member of the ensemble at the state theaters in Oldenburg and Braunschweig, had engagements and guest performances, among others in Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Munich, Zurich, and Frankfurt am Main. Kuhn was seen in numerous television productions (including Lindenstraße, Wolffs Revier, Soko Stuttgart, The Coastal Area). He records audiobooks, speaks features and radio plays for the broadcast, and works as a voice actor.

The relationship between Gustav Mahler and his “Almschi”, as he used to call his wife, could hardly have been more turbulent and difficult and would likely be considered toxic in today's context. Both endowed with a pronounced strong will and ample vanity, they entered into a marriage characterized by creativity, talent, jealousy, resentment, and yet deep love. The works that emerged from this relationship of two eccentric geniuses endure to this day and form the basis for a program that illuminates and terrifyingly brings close the coexistence and collaboration of the Mahler couple.

Actress Corinna Harfouch and her equally talented colleague Peter Lohmeyer interpret excerpts from the correspondence and works of the two spouses, as well as texts from those who encountered them during their lifetimes, such as Johannes Brahms, Sigmund Freud, Bruno Walter, and many others.

Musically brought to the stage, the life’s work of the Mahlers is presented by pianist Hideyo Harada and singer Roman Trekel. A musical-literary potpourri emerges that is at least as fascinating and engaging as the life of Alma and Gustav Mahler themselves.

Ethel Smyth, born in 1858 in Sidcup/Kent, was an English composer and a significant figure in the British music scene of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With hunger strikes, "icy silence," and the refusal of social duties, Smyth earned herself the opportunity to study composition at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1877.

Her oeuvre includes operas, orchestral pieces, choral and chamber music works. As a suffragette, Smyth was active in the women's rights movement of her time and spent two months in London Holloway prison for her beliefs. Ethel Smyth died in 1944 at the age of 86 in Woking/County Surrey.

DER WALD is a one-act opera (originally in German) that premiered in 1902 at the then Prussian Court Opera – now the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. The plot is set in the Middle Ages, where the mistress of a forest leads a young woodcutter to ruin. This aimed to overturn societal hierarchies. Following its premiere, it was performed at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London and a year later at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. We will sing excerpts from the opera, with a performance duration of approximately 20 minutes.

THE PRISON is a symphony for solos, choir, and orchestra. Smyth composed the late-Romantic piece in 1930, by which time she was almost deaf. The protagonist of the story is a nameless prisoner who, standing before his execution, grapples with the questions on the threshold of life and death. The premiere was in 1931, and the performance duration is approximately 1 hour.

Bach's Christmas Oratorio retold in a version for children aged about four to nine years:
“Quite a long time ago, a composer, someone who writes music, was so happy about the Christ Child that he wanted to tell us the story again in his music. And this music is so beautiful that it is still often played at Christmas today. The story begins in a field, at night ...”.

In the fresh and humorous narration, the first three parts of the Christmas Oratorio are shortened and instead particularly vivid musical examples are included, which, alongside the story, unorthodoxly convey the children the musical instruments and their characteristics. Under the large dome of the Berlin Cathedral, the Berlin Cathedral Choir sings, accompanied by the Baroque Orchestra Aris & Aulis, under the direction of Cathedral Choirmaster Adrian Büttemeier.

George Gershwin transcended borders and was not only musically far ahead of his time. Through his casting of black singers, for the first time in American theaters, racial barriers were broken not only behind the scenes but also in the audience.

Songs have marked his life - for over 50 years. For Konstantin Wecker, this is reason enough to reflect on the past decades in countless performances in a wonderful way for himself and his audience. With the new chamber music program “Songs of My Life,” the Munich musician, composer, and author presents his personal poetic highlights from the beginnings to the present day together with his pianist and long-time companion Jo Barnikel.

Among them will be classics like “When Summer is Not Far Away,” the song “Willy” written in the 70s, “Anger and Tenderness,” “Sometimes I Cry a Lot,” as well as “The Lunatics” from his very first LP “The Sadopoetic Songs of Konstantin Amadeus Wecker.”
