17 musicians – a sound that convinces. The SWR Big Band has been nominated multiple times for the Grammy – the most important music award in the world. Most recently, SWR Big Band arranger John Beasley won the Grammy in 2023 for “Scrapple From The Apple” from the joint album “Bird Lives.” In 2011, the SWR Big Band became the first German band to receive the “Premio da Música Brasileira” and in 2015 the “German Jazz Award in Gold.” With so much fame, it can be said modestly: The SWR Big Band is one of the best in the world and from this category come many of its diverse guests: Quincy Jones, Larry Carlton, Pat Metheny, George Benson, Zaz, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gary Burton, Curtis Stigers, Jacob Collier, Patti Austin, Roy Hargrove, Martin Tingvall, Sammy Nestico, Maria Schneider, Ivan Lins, John Beasley, Ack van Rooyen, Joo Kraus, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Bill Holman, Bob Mintzer, Nils Landgren, New York Voices, Magnus Lindgren, and Ralf Schmid. Or would you prefer a bit more pop? That works too – for example with Paul Carrack, Max Mutzke, or Götz Alsmann. The band gives concerts and guest performances all over Germany and beyond in Europe. Similar to the great big bands of the USA, the SWR Big Band has its very own sound. The starting shot for this was on April 1, 1951, under its founder and conductor Erwin Lehn. Since then, more than 10,000 arrangements have been created for this exceptional orchestra, which soon after its founding was considered the “Daimler among big bands.” Because many stars stood on stage: Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Dexter Gordon, Astrud Gilberto, Chet Baker, Caterina Valente, or Arturo Sandoval. Since the early 90s, the SWR Big Band has performed with different conductors – depending on the project and music style. Since 2018, the Swedish saxophonist and flutist Magnus Lindgren has been closely associated with the band as Artist in Residence, continuously developing their sound.
